CarL1 Potomac Nationals

Frias and Rooney Keep Nats in First

September 1, 2010 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Potomac Nationals News Release

(SALEM, VA) Marcos Frias cruised for six innings and Sean Rooney hit a two-run homer to spearhead a big late-season 4-2 victory for the Potomac Nationals in Salem on Wednesday night.

In the first inning, it did not look like the kind of night Frias would dominate. He walked a pair in the opening frame, but a deep fly out and a line shot to Jose Lozada at shortstop got Frias out of the last real self-created jam on the night.

The Sox did take a 1-0 lead on an unearned run in the second inning. With one out, Ryan Dent hit a double into the right field corner; Francisco Soriano caught the relay throw and fired errantly past Lozada at second to send Dent to third. He would score on Jon Hee's groundout.

The Nationals tied the game and appeared to take the lead in the third. A leadoff single and stolen base put Dan Lyons at second base. With two outs, Derek Norris walked. Salem catcher tried to throw behind Lyons at second but air-mailed the throw into center to push Lyons over to third. The next offering was a wild pitch that scored the Nationals first run and moved Norris to second. Norris appeared to score on Rhinehart's single to left, but the Sox appealed and it was ruled the Norris missed the third base bag. The game remained tied at one.

In the fourth the Nationals took the lead for good - and made sure that an appeal would not be a factor. Tyler Moore led off the inning with a single to left. Sean Rooney annihilated the next pitch over the wall in right field for his third homer with Potomac.

Frias retired 13 of the final 15 batters he faced and gave way to Carlos Martinez. Martinez was perfect for two innings with a pair of strikeouts.

The Nats cashed in on a misplay by Oscar Tejeda on a Soriano popup and got an insurance run in the fifth. The Sox got the unearned run back in the ninth off Patrick McCoy, but McCoy struck out Drew Hedman to end the affair and secure his fifth save.

Wilmington won for the second straight night at home, so the Potomac lead stayed put at a game and a half. The teams play game four of the series Thursday night at 7:05 P.M. Evan Bronson makes his return to Potomac to face Brock Huntzinger. The broadcast can be heard beginning at 6:40.

The Nationals return home Saturday for their final homestand of the regular season over Labor Day Weekend. A Fireworks Saturday and a Jersey Auction kick off the bonanza at Pfitzner Stadium, so call 703-590-2311 to get your tickets now.
