THE HILLCATS: Last night Winston-Salem blanked Lynchburg with a 6-0 victory in the series opener of the four-game set...Tonight the Cats play game two of their series with the Dash and the second contest of a seven-game road trip that will round out the 2010 regular season...Lynchburg entered today four games back of Potomac for the final playoff spot in the Northern Division with six games left to play in the second half of the season...
VS. WINSTON-SALEM: Lynchburg is 4-13 against Winston-Salem this season and 2-5 in the Triad...The Dash have three, three-game series sweeps of the Hillcats this year...Last season the Cats went 11-9 against the Dash...Lynchburg holds the all-time advantage in the series with Winston-Salem 160-153...The last time the Green & Gold traveled to BB&T Ballpark, they got the better of the Dash in two out of three games in the set...
STILL BREATHING: The Hillcats are four games back of the first place Nationals after Lynchburg lost last night and Potomac split a doubleheader at Salem...The Cats do not play the P-Nats again and they also have to catch up on Wilmington, who they trail by two and a half games...
AUGUST RUSH: In the month of August Lynchburg went 16-12 to give them their first over .500 month of the season...The Hillcats batted .266 in the month and had a 3.72 ERA...
GOOD AFTERTASTE: Sunday night was the last home game of the regular season for the Hillcats...They closed out the home campaign with a 4-3 win in ten innings over the Blue Rocks...Lynchburg went 33-37 in 70 home games in 2010...They finished off their games at City Stadium by going 9-5 in their last two homestands combined...This after they had dropped 13 out of 16 at Calvin Falwell Field...On Sunday the Cats won in walk-off fashion for the sixth time this season in the Hill City...Last season they won their final home game of the season with a walk-off win...They topped Salem in game two of the Mills Cup Championship with a walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth inning by UTIL Jose De Los Santos...
PROSPECT SWAPPING: SS Miguel Rojas was promoted back to Double-A Carolina yesterday and SS Didi Gregorius was promoted to Lynchburg from Low-A Dayton to take his spot on the roster...Rojas was batting .230 with a home run and 14 runs driven in in 74 games with the Hillcats...Gregorius was hitting .273 with 11 triples, five home runs, 41 RBI and 16 steals in 120 games for the Dragons...Rojas was ranked as the 17th best prospect in the Reds minor League system prior to the start of the season according to Baseball America, while Gregorius was the 15th ranked and last night in hs Advanced-A debut he went 1-for-2 with a walk...
FALL BALL: The Cincinnati Reds announced their representatives for the prestigious Arizona Fall League and the list includes four former Hillcats from 2010...C Devin Mesoraco, OF Dave Sappelt, LHP Jeremy Horst and RHP James Avery will play for the Peoria Saguaros this fall...Three former Hillcats in the Pirates organization will also play in the Fall League, for the Mesa Solar Sox...Pittsburgh's 2009 first-round draft pick (fourth overall) C Tony Sanchez will play with former Cats UTIL Josh Harrison and INF Jordy Mercer...
NATE DOGG: RHP Nate Jones tossed seven scoreless innings last night for Winston-Salem to earn his fourth victory against Lynchburg this season...He has made six starts starts against the Hillcats this year and gone 4-1 with a 2.73 ERA (11 earned runs in 36 and 1/3 innings)...The righty has more wins against the Cats than any other hurler in the Carolina League...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Dylan Axelrod was signed last season by the White Sox after he was released by the Padres organization...Originally a 30th round selection of San Diego in the 2007 draft, he spent 2008 with full-season Low-A Fort Wayne and Advanced-A Lake Elsinore...With the Wizards in the Midwest League he went 1-1 with a 3.62 ERA in 23 games and with the Storm in the California League he was 2-1 with a 5.29 ERA in 32 relief appearances...Last season Axelrod was 0-0 with a 4.50 ERA in 11 games pitching for Lake Elsinore before he was released...He signed with Chicago and pitched two games with full-season Low-A Kannapolis and allowed one run in four and 1/3 innings (2.08 ERA) before coming to Winston-Salem...Axelrod made five starts for the Dash last season and went 2-1 with a 1.91 ERA...This season he returned to the Dash and has gone 6-2 with a 2.20 ERA in 20 games (10 starts)...He also has made two starts for Double-A Birmingham and went 0-1 with a 2.70 ERA before returning to Winston-Salem...Axelrod made two starts against Lynchburg last season and went 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA (three earned runs in 11 innings)...This season he has made two starts against the Hillcats and gone 2-0 with a 0.75 ERA (one earned run in 12 innings)...
