Columbia Fireflies News Release
COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Columbia Fireflies, in conjunction with the South Atlantic League, have released the team's schedule for the Inaugural Season at Spirit Communications Park in downtown Columbia.
The first home game at Spirit Communications Park will be played on Thursday, April 14, 2016 against in-state rival, the Greenville Drive (affiliate of the Boston Red Sox). The home opener will mark the return of professional baseball to the Midlands after an eleven year absence.
"This is another milestone for Columbia's professional team," said Fireflies team President John Katz. "The reaction to the team name and affiliate announcement has been outstanding, work on Spirit Communications Park is progressing and Opening Day will be here before we know it."
Other highlights of the 2016 schedule at Spirit Communications Park include Fireflies home games on Independence Day (Monday, July 4) and Labor Day (Monday, September 5).
The Fireflies (affiliate of the New York Mets) will open the 2016 season Thursday April 7th, on the road in Charleston, taking on the Fireflies' other in-state rival, the Charleston RiverDogs (affiliate of the New York Yankees).
The Fireflies will play a 140-game schedule, with 70 home games at Spirit Communications Park. The season begins each year in early April and concludes on Labor Day. Following the regular season, there are two-rounds of playoff games to determine the League Champions.
The South Atlantic League is comprised of 14 teams, including the Fireflies. The league footprint stretches from Charleston to the south all the way to Lakewood, New Jersey in the north. The Fireflies will host the Greenville Drive for seven games in 2016 and the Charleston RiverDogs ten times. Along with those in-state rivalries, there will also be some fantastic South Carolina / Georgia matchups, featuring opponents like the Rome Braves (affiliate of the Atlanta Braves) and the Augusta GreenJackets (affiliate of the San Francisco Giants).
The Fireflies will unveil their 2016 game times and promotional schedule for their first season at Spirit Communications Park in the future.
The team is now taking reservations for Season Ticket packages, including Full Season (70 games), Half Season (35 games), Quarter Season (17 games) and Mini Season packages (12 games).
