Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
Charleston, WV (August 17, 2015) - The South Atlantic League has announced its Pitcher-of-the-Week for the period of August 10 through 16 and West Virginia Power left-hander Stephen Tarpley was honored for his efforts during that span. Tarpley, acquired by the Pittsburgh Pirates in January through a trade with Baltimore, went 1-0 during the week, limiting the Hickory Crawdads to three hits over eight shutout innings on August 15.
West Virginia beat Hickory 9-0 on Saturday, August 15, though the Power did not score until a three run home run by Jordan Luplow in the fifth inning and added three in the eighth and three more in the ninth to seal the win. Tarpley allowed a single in the first inning, a single in the fourth and one more base hit in the seventh. Hickory did not take a single at bat with a runner in scoring position over the course of the entire game.
Tarpley is 10-2 this season with a 2.14 earned run average over 16 starts. The southpaw went 5-0 in July and held a 1.72 ERA over six appearances and has not lost a decision since June 15. On July 7, Tarpley pitched a rain-shortened, six inning no-hitter against the Delmarva Shorebirds at Appalachian Power Park.
The Pirates acquired Tarpley and fellow left-handed pitcher Steven Brault on January 27 from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for outfielder Travis Snider.
Tarpley is the third West Virginia Power player to be honored by the league at any point this year, join Michael Suchy and Jordan Luplow, who were each tabbed as Player-of-the-Week earlier this season. For more information, contact the Power front office at (304) 344-2287 or visit www.wvpower.com.
