Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (August 17, 2015) - The Kannapolis Intimidators, Class A Affiliate of the Chicago White Sox, have promoted right-handed pitcher Spencer Adams, the organization's No. 4 prospect according to MLB.com, to the Class A-Advanced Winston-Salem Dash. Adams is joined in Winston-Salem by All-Star catcher Brett Austin, who has earned his first promotion to the Carolina League. In corresponding moves, the Intimidators receive left-handed pitcher Devon Davis from Double-A Birmingham and catcher Sean O'Connell from the Dash.
Adams, 19, is 9-5 with a 3.24 ERA (36 ER/100.0 IP) - the eight-best ERA in the South Atlantic League - in 19 games (19 starts) with Kannapolis. He leads all starters on the circuit with the lowest walks/9 IP ratio at 0.99 (11 BB-IBB/100.0 IP) and ranks fifth among starters in fewest base runners/9 IP ratio at 11.07 (123 H-BB-HBP/100.0 IP). He has been one of the hottest arms in the SAL in the Second Half, going 6-1 with a 2.13 ERA (10 ER/42.1 IP) in seven starts with the Intimidators, ranking tied for second in the league in wins and sixth in the league in ERA in that time. The White Sox selected Adams in the second round (44th overall) of the June 2014 First-Year Player Draft out of White County (Ga.) High School. This is his second promotion of the season to Winston-Salem. Adams earned a win for the Dash on July 19 with 6.0 scoreless innings against Lynchburg in his High-A debut.
Austin, 22, ranks fourth among SAL catchers, having thrown out 33 base stealers in 94 attempts (.351). The switch-hitting backstop has appeared in 84 games for the Intimidators, batting .203 (59-290) with 12 doubles, five triples, four home runs, 32 RBI, and 29 runs scored. His defense earned him a spot in the South Atlantic League's Mid-Season All-Star Game, where he helped lead the Northern Division to a 7-5. The White Sox selected Austin in the fourth round of the June 2014 First-Year Player Draft out of N.C. State where he was teammates with the Sox top pick in 2014, Carlos Rodon. He made his professional debut last season with the Intimidators, batting .235 (36-153) with 12 doubles and 15 RBI in 42 games.
O'Connell, 23, returns to Kannapolis after his second stint with Winston-Salem. The catcher is batting .154 (6-39) with a double, three RBI, and four runs scored over 13 games between the two levels. He appeared in three games with the Intimidators in mid-May.
Davis, 23, rejoins the Intimidators after making 19 appearances between Winston-Salem and the Birmingham Barons. The left-handed reliever made three scoreless appearances with the Dash before joining the Barons to open the month of June. He went 2-2 with a 4.71 ERA (11 ER/21.0 IP) in 16 games in the Southern League. Overall this season, Davis is 5-4 with a 3.65 ERA (22 ER/44.1 IP) and 46 strikeouts in 28 games between all three classifications. With Kannapolis, he is 2-2 with a 3.86 ERA (7 ER/16.1 IP) with one save in one opportunity in nine relief appearances. The White Sox signed Davis as a free agent in April of 2014, and he made his professional debut last season with the AZL White Sox and Advance Rookie Great Falls.
