Maher Raises the Bar, RiverDogs Blank Braves

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Joey Maher held the Rome Braves scoreless and only allowed one hit in seven innings, as the Charleston RiverDogs won their second straight game 3-0, Monday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

Maher (5-4) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before Luke Dykstra, the second batter of the frame, broke it up with a single. It was the only hit Maher allowed in seven-scoreless innings. He also finished with seven strikeouts.

Rome best chance to score came with the bases loaded and two down in the sixth. Maher buckled down and struck Bryan De La Rosa out with a curveball looking to end the threat, sending the 2,598 fans in attendance into a frenzy.

The RiverDogs (20-30 second half, 54-66 overall) were the first to score as they tallied a run in the bottom of the fifth. Radley Haddad and Griff Gordon hit back-to-back singles, and Devyn Bolasky moved the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. Vince Conde continued to produce and delivered a sacrifice fly to right, which scored Haddad and put Charleston on top 1-0.

The RiverDogs added a run of insurance in the bottom of the seventh against Francisco Gonzalez, who came in to relieve Rome's starter Touki Toussaint (3-5). With the bases loaded and two outs, Billy Fleming ripped a single into right field and Haddad scored his second run of the game.

Charleston loaded the bases again with two outs in the following inning and tallied another run. Bolasky drew a walk with the bags full and Austin Aune was able to walk home from third base.

Philip Walby and Brody Koerner pitched one inning each to keep Rome off the board in the final two innings. Koerner worked around a leadoff single by Omar Obregon to retire the Braves in the ninth and earn his second save with the RiverDogs.

BALLPARK FUN: The RiverDogs honored Major Thomas Richmond and Major Jennifer Richmond on the first day of HOPE Week. The Richmonds have been with the Salvation Army organization for 20 years and currently serve as the Commanding Officers and pastors here in Charleston. They came to the stadium early to watch batting practice and met the players before the game.

The RiverDogs also spoofed Monday Night Football once again with another successful Monday Night Baseball. The whole team entered the stadium by running through an inflatable Charlie T. RiverDog head in right field. Speaking of Charlie, he squared off in an intense mascot race against a hot dog, shark, and corn cob to wrap up the evening. The fans once again brought their gold gloves to the park as a sparkling play was made in the suite level early in the ballgame.

COMING UP: The RiverDogs continue their three-game series against Rome Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. Charleston will send LHP Justin Kamplain (3-13, 5.00 ERA) to the mound against RHP Sean Furney (6-5, 3.00 ERA) for the Braves.
