Colorado Eagles News Release
Tuesday, November 30; Hogg's Hat Trick Leads Eagles Past 'Jacks
ODESSA, Texas - Adam Hogg recorded his first career hat trick as the Colorado Eagles defeated the Odessa Jackalopes, 5-2, at the Ector County Coliseum. Kyle Jones stopped 37 of 39 shots to notch his ninth win of the season, giving him the league lead in that category and keeping him the only goalie left in the league without a regulation loss.
In the opening period, Colorado out-shot Odessa 15-8, getting a substantial amount of chances while shorthanded. But the Eagles couldn't beat Michel Robinson until late in the frame when Hogg -- who has seven points (6-1-7) in his past three games -- got his first goal of the night with a slapshot from the top of the left circle.
In a second period littered with penalties, Hogg made it 2-0 with a shorthanded goal -- the first since his rookie season -- 70 seconds in. On the play, Braden Desmet took a turnover in the high slot of his own end and sent a lead pass up the middle of the ice. Hogg won a race to the puck, gained control low in the right circle and snapped a shot top-shelf.
The Jackalopes got on the board five minutes into the second stanza, cutting Colorado's lead in half. Off a faceoff win in the right circle, Dominic Leveille got the puck below the goal line and found a wide open Jeff Pierce between the hash marks for a one-timer past Jones. But the Eagles countered just under two minutes later when Matt Glasser poked home a Kyle Peto rebound from the side of the cage on the power play, making it 3-1.
Midway through the final frame, Daymen Rycroft snared an Odessa clearing attempt at the left point, skated toward the net and set up the 30th hat trick in franchise history by finding Hogg wide open for a back-door tap-in. But at 14:02, Todd Robinson found Sebastien Thinel in a similar situation and the league's leading scorer cut Colorado's lead in half by banking his second shot attempt off Jones' back.
A few minutes later -- with the game still in question -- Jones made a brilliant glove save on an Alex Dunn shorthanded shot from the low slot, paving the way for Rycroft to put the game away with a score at 17:26. On the final tally, the Eagles' leading goal scorer intercepted the puck in the high slot of his own zone, raced down the ice on an odd-man rush and blasted a shot past Robinson to make it 5-2.

Friday, December 3; Jones Named Sher-Wood/CHL Goaltender of the Month
(LEAGUE RELEASE - TEMPE, AZ - December 3, 2010) - The Central Hockey League announced today that Kyle Jones of the Colorado Eagles has been named the Sher-Wood Central Hockey League Goaltender of the Month for November/2010. Jones will receive a Sher-Wood/CHL logoed watch courtesy of Sher-Wood and the Central Hockey League to recognize his accomplishment.
Additionally, Jones will be awarded 1,000 CHL Loyalty Rewards points. More than 20,000 people have joined the fastest growing sports affinity program in the past year, learn more or become a member at www.chlpoints.com.
Jones earned points in all seven of his starts in the month of November posting a 6-0-1 record allowing just 14 goals in those seven games. For the month, he finished with a 2.03 goals against average and a .943 save percentage. His strong play is a big reason that the Eagles are paving the way in the Turner Conference with a 12-4-1 record and a five point lead. The North Delta, British Columbia native allowed two goals or fewer in four of his seven appearances including two shutouts.
Friday, December 3; Penalty-Filled Period Sways Game in Eagles Loss
WICHITA, Kan. - The Colorado Eagles fell, 5-4, to the Wichita Thunder as the home team scored all five of their goals in a penalty-filled second period. Despite the score, Andrew Penner was strong in net for the Eagles, who had just two power plays compared to Wichita's seven. The game was delayed a half hour because referee Tudor Floru was stuck in transit, and the complexion of the contest changed once he arrived; linesman Dennis Mercer filled in as ref in the first frame.
The Eagles out-shot the Thunder 12-8 in a first period of back-and-forth action. Penner was strong in net, making several quality saves, while a giveaway by Marc-Antonie Gelinas at the other end of the ice led to the only goal of the frame. At 14:53, Gelinas committed a turnover similar to one by Penner last Saturday -- in the same building -- and Brett Thurston sent the puck into the net for his second goal of the season.
After a fast-flowing -- and penalty-free -- first period, the second period saw seven power-plays awarded, the first five in a row to Wichita, and just one overall to Colorado. It started early with Kory Scoran tying the game at 1 just 10 seconds into the first power-play 38 seconds into the period.
Colorado countered at 3:59 when Aaron Schneekloth took a back-door pass from Dylan Stanley and beat Gelinas. And just over three and a half minutes later, the Eagles made it 3-1 when Kip Workman converted on a similar play from Daymen Rycroft.
But at 8:09, a third penalty in a row was called on Colorado and Head Coach Chris Stewart made it a two-man disadvantage by demonstrating his displeasure through tossing water bottles onto the playing surface -- getting ejected in the process.
On the ensuing 5-on-3, A.J. Gale was able to trim Colorado's lead to 3-2 by beating the Eagles' netminder with a third whack from the doorstep. And at 13:07, Scoran got his second score of the period -- on Wichita's fifth power play in a row -- after poking home a puck that Penner appeared to have frozen without getting a whistle.
The Thunder took the lead 51 seconds later when Jesse Bennefield beat defenseman George Bradley. And less than a minute after that, Aaron Davis made it 5-3 for the home team, scoring Wichita's fourth goal in a row.
Colorado got a brief reprieve from the penalty kill and converted 19 seconds into their only man advantage of the period to make it 5-4, Wichita. Schneekloth picked up the goal -- his second of the period -- by jamming home a rebound at 15:48. The eight combined goals in the second stanza tied a franchise record for most goals in a period. The five goals against tied the second-most ever scored in a single period against the Eagles.
In a third period that saw just two penalties called (one on each team), the Eagles out-shot the Thunder 8-5 -- out-shooting them in the game despite the power-play discrepancy -- but couldn't beat Gelinas again, and the game ended the same way the second period did.
Saturday, December 4; Eagles Add Another Rookie in Chorneyko
WINDSOR, Colo. - The Colorado Eagles announced today that they have added rookie forward Adam Chorneyko (pronounced: chore-NAY-ko) to their roster. The 6-foot, 205-pound forward spent a total of 11 games with the Texas Brahmas last season (Colorado's opponent tonight), seven of them coming in the 2010 playoffs. Chorneyko will wear #67.
Saturday, December 4; Eagles Remain Winless at NYTEX, Lose 4-1
NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas - The Colorado Eagles lost, 4-1, to the Texas Brahmas as they wrapped up a four-game road trip. The Eagles have an all-time record (including playoffs) of 0-6-1 at the NYTEX Sports Centre. The loss gives Colorado its first regulation losing streak of the season.
Assistant Coach WINDSOR, Colo. Chorneyko will wear #67.NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas - The Colorado Eagles lost, 4-1, to the Texas Brahmas as they wrapped up a four-game road trip. The Eagles have an all-time record (including playoffs) of 0-6-1 at the NYTEX Sports Centre. The loss gives Colorado its first regulation losing streak of the season. Assistant Coach Greg Pankewicz acted as the Eagles' bench boss as Head Coach Chris Stewart served a one-game suspension for his disagreement with referee Tudor Floru Friday night. Floru, who was scheduled to ref the game in Texas, was replaced by Geoff Miller.
The Brahmas carried most of the play in the opening period, out-shooting the Eagles 14-4. But Kyle Jones -- the CHL's Goaltender of the Month for November -- kept Colorado in the game, stopping every Texas shot. Kevin Beech stopped every Eagles shot at the other end of the ice to make it a scoreless first frame.
The Eagles leveled the play in the second period, but two late goals by the Brahmas sent them to the second intermission up by a pair. The middle period saw several power plays for each side, but neither was able to capitalize with the man-advantage.
At 16:48, Todd Griffith entered the Eagles' zone with Alex Curran to his left, sent a pass to him high in the circle and Curran's shot beat Jones for the game's first goal. Exactly one minute later, Greg Hogeboom won a faceoff in the right circle of Colorado's zone, took a stride around the opposing centerman, collected the puck and threw it top-shelf all in one motion to make it 2-0.
Texas grew its lead to 4-0 -- and looked like it would hand the Eagles their first shutout of the season -- before Daymen Rycroft increased his team-leading point total with a tally with 1:39 left in the game.
Dan Riedel made it 3-0 at 4:27 of the final frame when Texas used a quick transition to turn a Colorado odd-man rush into one of their own. And at 10:56, Griffith made it 4-0 with sharp-angled shot from the left side of the net that resulted in the referee and goal judge discussing whether or not it actually went in.
On Rycroft's goal, Aaron Schneekloth carried the puck down the left wing and deep through the circle before dropping a pass into the low slot for a one-timer past Beech.
The Week Ahead
Friday, Dec. 10 & Saturday, Dec. 11; Eagles Look To Maintain Winning Ways Vs. Odessa The Jackalopes will return to the Budweiser Events Center for the first time since the preseason. This weekend's set will be the second and third games in the season series that will see the teams match-up seven times; Colorado took the first meeting, 5-2, last Tuesday. Riding their longest losing streak of the season -- at just two games -- the Eagles will look to get back on the winning track as they take comfort in the fact that they're 9-0-0 all-time against the Jackalopes at the BEC in the regular season. The talented Jackalopes -- they have the league's top two scorers -- enter the week tied for second-to last place in the entire league -- and last place in the Berry Conference -- with 17 points (8-12-1).
Notable Numbers
SHORT STREAKS - The Eagles have lost two games in a row, matching their longest winless streak of the season. It's the first time both losses have come in regulation, as their previous winless streak (Nov. 12-13) included a shootout loss. NOW #7 - With a pair of assists last night, Riley Nelson moved into 7th place on the CHL's career points list with 659th (258-401-659) in 521 games. He leapfrogged Paul Jackson, with Hardy Sauter (669) up next. The Eagles' captain ranks 10th on the league's career goals list (three behind the still-active Chris Richards) and 11th on the career assists list (19 away from cracking the Top-10 and tying Joe Burton). ABLE TO RELATE - The Eagles have as much time winning on the road against the Brahmas as the Jackalopes have winning at the Budweiser Events Center. Colorado's loss to the Brahmas on Saturday makes their all-time record at the NYTEX Sports Centre 0-3-1, being out-scored 9-18. Against Odessa -- who comes to town for a pair of games this weekend -- at the Budweiser Events Center, Colorado is a perfect 9-0-0, out-scoring the 'Jacks 37-18. OFFENSIVE FUTILITY - The Brahmas were able to hold the Eagles to just one goal for the second time this season on Saturday. The last time Colorado managed just one score was nearly a month earlier in a 1-0 victory at Dayton. Highlighting Colorado's struggles in Texas on Saturday is that they were credited with just 19 shots in the game. That ties the second-fewest number of shots for the Eagles in their history. SATURDAY SLUMP - Part of what's made Colorado so successful historically is their weekend record. The Eagles are a combined 73-21-11 on Saturdays over the past five seasons -- never losing more than five games. This season, the Eagles have a losing record on Saturdays at 3-4-0. FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING - Kyle Jones suffered his first regulation loss of the year on Saturday in his first start since being named the CHL's Goaltender of the Month for November. He still ranks among the top three in the league in wins, goals-against average, save percentage and shutouts. HELPING PRODUCE WINS - Defenseman Kyle Peto is tied for first among all blueliners with 14 assists. He's gone two games in a row without an assist just twice, and has yet to go as many as three without one. Colorado is 9-2-0 when he registers a helper, 3-4-1 when he does not.
