Dayton Gems News Release

Week in Review: (Thursday, 12-2-10)

The fifth meeting in 16 games for the Gems and the Evansville IceMen was a wild one at that. Evansville took the early 1-0 lead in the first period on a goal from Brian Bicek and IceMen netminder David Wilson stopped all 12 shots on goal. Nicklas Lindberg pushed the Evansville lead to 2-0 at the 1:34 mark of the second period. Chris Lipsett cut the lead in half with a deflection off a shot from the point from Tysen Dowzak. Lindberg gave the IceMen a two-goal lead with only eight seconds left in the second to push it up to 3-1 after two periods of play. Nick Canzanello quickly sliced the deficit to one with a perfect shot over Wilson's glove at the 1:34 mark of the third period. Newcomer Matt Larke tied the game at 3-3 on the power play at the 13:49 mark. Goaltender Derek MacIntyre made some spectacular saves near the end of regulation to force overtime. In the extra session, MacIntyre made the save of the game with a skate stop off of an Evansville odd man rush. Seconds later, Chris Lipsett won the game when he re-directed Mike Vaskivuo's pass into the net off of his right skate blade. Final Score: Dayton 4, Evansville 3 in overtime.

Week in Review: (Friday, 12-3-10)

A rematch of the Thursday night matchup took place between the Gems and the Icemen, this time at Swonder Ice Arena in Evansville. Trying to bounce back from the overtime loss in front of their home crowd, the IceMen got the early lead when a Gems defenseman accidentally put the puck into his own net to make it 1-0 at the 2:24 mark. Ernie Stewart tied the game at 1-1 at the 8:03 mark with his third goal in Evansville this season. The IceMen pushed the lead up to 3-1 by scoring two goals 21 seconds apart later in the first period to take the lead into the second frame. Mike Vaskivuo cut the deficit to one at 3-2 when he scored at the 10:35 mark finishing off a perfectly executed 3-on-2 odd man rush to beat IceMen starter Matt Lundin, but that would be the last goal either team would register giving Evansville the 3-2 victory. Jeff Jakaitis was in net for the Gems and stopped 27 of 30 shots in the losing effort and the Gems finished the game 0-6 on the power play. After six games with the IceMen, the series is now tied at three games apiece.

Week in Review: (Saturday, 12-4-10)

The Gems finished out the week with a rivalry game against the Fort Wayne Komets, a team they had been undefeated against going into the game (2-0 record). Right off the opening faceoff, Chris Lipsett hit the crossbar within the first 15 seconds of the game. Following the Lipsett chance, the Komets jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a pair of goals from forward Leo Thomas. Komets starter Nick Boucher stopped all nine Dayton shots on goal to keep the lead after the first period. In the second, Lipsett wouldn't miss with his first shot of the period and cut the lead to 2-1 with a power play goal at the 6:34 mark. The Gems would outshoot the Komets 13-6 in the second period but still trailed 2-1 after 40 minutes. Lipsett tied the game in the third when he was left untouched in the slot and picked the top corner of the net on Boucher's stick-side at the 2:34 mark. Corey Couturier went on to score the game-winning-goal less than four minutes later when he beat Boucher on an incredible angle. The Gems defense and Jeff Jakaitis held up their end of the bargain the rest of the way giving the Gems the 3-2 come from behind win. Dayton is now 3-0 against Fort Wayne this season, having outscored the Komets 9-4 in the three games the teams have played against each other.

Dayton Gems Weekly Notes

By doing so, the Gems have vaulted up the CHL penalty kill ranks from 18th all the way to 12th in just five games and their penalty kill percentage has gone from 78% to 81% overall.

BOUNCE BACK ABILITY: The Gems have an uncanny ability to bounce back this season after a loss, posting a record of 5-1-1 when doing so. MacIntyre has a mind-numbing .962 save percentage in the third period stopping 51-53 shots against.

TERRIFIC TEDDY BEAR TOSS: This past Saturday's game against the Fort Wayne Komets was the Gems annual Teddy Bear Toss promotion where the fans got to throw a teddy bear onto the ice after the Gems scored their first goal.
