Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - Edwar Colina and Jared Finkel pitched the Cedar Rapids Kernels to a 6-0 shutout Tuesday against the Beloit Snappers in front of 2,851 fans at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Kernels (6-0, 38-37) have won six games in a row to start each half of the season. Those streaks are also the longest win streaks for Cedar Rapids this year.
Colina (3-2) notched his second consecutive shutout start and earned the win to clinch a series victory over Beloit (3-3, 35-40). He allowed just three hits and one walk over six scoreless innings. Tuesday's triumph was Colina's first win since combining with Jovani Moran for a 10-0 no-hitter May 1 against the South Bend Cubs.
Finkel recorded three scoreless innings out of the bullpen for his second save overall. After posting perfect frames in the seventh and eighth innings, Finkel worked around a one-out single during the ninth to finish the contest.
Jose Miranda's second grand slam of the season launched Cedar Rapids to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. A leadoff single by Akil Baddoo and back-to-back walks for Jacob Pearson and Royce Lewis opened the frame. Miranda batted next and cleared the bases with a home run to left field. Bryce Conley (3-3) allowed the grand slam and took the loss with four runs conceded over three innings pitched.
Lewis extended the Kernels' advantage to 6-0 within the fourth. Baddoo drew a two-out walk against Jesus Zambrano to keep the inning alive. Pearson added a single and moved to second base during the attempt to throw out Baddoo at third. Lewis produced an RBI single that drove in both runners.
The Kernels have outscored their opponents by a 36-10 margin within a season-high-tying six-game win streak to begin the second half. Cedar Rapids improved to 2-0 in this three-game series and 6-0 for its seven-game homestand.
This three-game series comes to a close Wednesday afternoon with first pitch at 12:05 p.m., and Kernels right-hander Randy Dobnak (5-2, 4.18) is scheduled to face Snappers southpaw Ivan Andueza (0-3, 4.53). Fans unable to attend the series finale can follow the game online at www.kmryradio.com, www.kernels.com, and MiLB.TV.
Wednesday's Noon Game includes a Noon Game Combo Special for $8.50 that consists of a regular sandwich, a choice of chips or popcorn, and a choice between a 16 oz. regular draft beer or 20 oz. bottled soda or water.
