West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
SOUTH BEND, IN - West Michigan Whitecaps pitcher Matt Manning scattered eight hits and commanded a blazing fastball to strike out eight batters in a 10-3 victory over the South Bend Cubs Tuesday at Four Winds Field.
Manning (3-3), who entered the game with a road record of 0-3 with a 6.46 ERA in six games this season, enjoyed his best game away from Fifth Third Ballpark in 2018. The 20-year-old spread out eight singles in seven frames of one-run baseball while striking out eight with no walks to earn his third win of the season. The right-hander has allowed just one run in his last two starts spanning 14 innings.
Colby Bortles launched the onslaught with a two-run double in the first inning before Dylan Rosa and Rey Rivera each followed suit with doubles to drive in a pair of runs to highlight four-run fourth and seventh frames in the contest. In the meantime, Manning, the Detroit Tigers 2016 first round draft pick flashed a fastball that ran up to 96 mph and amassed all eight of his strikeouts after the second inning.
South Bend starter Brendon Little (2-5) gave up six runs in five innings in taking his fifth loss of the season. Dylan Rosa enjoyed a 2-for-3 performance with two runs scored, a walk and two RBI to lead the "Caps offense in the victory. Jose Azocar recorded a pair of hits of his own with an RBI and is batting .350 in his last ten games. The win gives the Whitecaps their first series win on the road since taking two of three games at Cedar Rapids from May 4-6.
