South Bend Cubs News Release
South Bend, IN: In search of salvaging game two of the series to avoid losing back-to-back games to the West Michigan Whitecaps, the South Bend Cubs bats could not get anything started against West Michigan right hander Matt Manning. In a 10-3 loss, the Whitecaps take the series in the second of nine straight at home for South Bend.
Sending left hander Brendon Little to the mound tonight after missing time since early June, the Cubs hoped the break for little could give him an advantage over West Michigan. On three straight base hits in the top of the 1st inning, ending with a two run double from Colby Bortles, the Whitecaps jumped out to the early 2-0 lead.
All three hits in the first were all late swings and base hits into right field. Little was hitting his spots, but the Whitecaps were finding ways to get the bat on the ball. South Bend was never able to recover fully. On two separate occasions, West Michigan plated four runs in an inning. First in the top of the 4th, then in the top of the 7th.
In all, Little gave up six runs with all of them being earned. He takes the loss to bring his record to 2-5. Out of the bullpen, right hander Ben Hecht allowed four earned runs to bring the West Michigan total to 10. Lefty Yapson Gomez pitched the final two frames, hanging zeros in both.
Despite the lopsided finish, South Bend ended up having more hits than West Michigan with 11 compared to the Whitecaps 10. It was the inability to score with runners in scoring position that hurt the Cubs.
Going just 1-9 with runners in scoring position, South Bend received two hit nights from Roberto Caro and Brandon Hughes. Also, making his return from the disabled list, Rafael Narea picked up a three hit game. The Cubs made a late rally in the bottom of the 9th inning when Chris Singleton smashed his third home run of the year over the left field wall. The two run shot put the game at its final stopping point at 10-3.
South Bend will hope to salvage the final game of the three game set against West Michigan tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. from Four Winds Field. Left hander Ricky Tyler Thomas is expected to make the start for the Cubs.
