Cole Hamels Trade Recap

August 3, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release

With the MLB trade deadline in the rearview mirror, the Phillies sent ace Cole Hamels and fellow LHP Jake Diekman to the Texas Rangers in exchange for LHP Matt Harrison and five prospects, including top catching prospect Jorge Alfaro. Here is a brief look at each of the newest members of the Philadelphia organization.

Harrison, 29, is 1-2 with a 6.75 ERA in 3 GS for the Rangers this season. The southpaw recently returned to the mound after undergoing spinal fusion surgery in June 2014. Harrison-who was a 2012 American League All-Star with Texas (18-11, 3.29 in 32 GS)-was acquired by the Rangers as part of the deal that sent Mark Teixeira to Atlanta in 2007. The Braves originally selected Harrison in the 3rd round of the 2003 draft.

Alfaro who was ranked as the No. 3 prospect in the TEX system by Baseball America prior to the season was hitting .253-5-21 in 49 games with Double-A Frisco before suffering an ankle injury that is expected to cause him to miss the rest of the season. The 22-year-old was signed by the Rangers as an international free agent at the age of 16 back in 2010. Alfaro played for the World Team in the 2013 and 2014 MLB All-Star Futures Game.

OF Nick Williams, a 21-year-old who was ranked as the No. 5 prospect in the Rangers system prior to the trade had been selected as a 2015 Texas League (AA) All-Star with Frisco. Williams hit .299-13-45 to go along with 21 doubles and 10 stolen bases over 97 games with the RoughRiders. The Galveston, Texas native was a second-round pick of the Rangers in 2012.

RHP Jake Thompson, 21, is on the move for the second time in as many years after being acquired by the Rangers in the deal that sent RHP Joakim Soria to Detroit in July of last season. The right-hander was widely considered as one of the top pitching prospects in the Texas system. Thompson, a second-round selection by the Tigers in 2012, was 6-6 with a 4.72 ERA in 17 starts with Frisco.

23-year-old RHP Alec Asher joins the organization after going a combined 4-10 with a 4.43 ERA in 20 GS between Frisco (1-4, 3.98 in 8 GS) and Triple-A Round Rock (3-6, 4.73 in 12 GS). Asher-who underwent Tommy John surgery at the age of 14-was drafted by Texas in the 4th round of 2012. The Lakeland, Fla. native was ranked as the No. 13 prospect in the Rangers system prior to the season.

RHP Jerad Eickhoff, a 25-year-old Illinois native, posted a 9-4 record to go along with a 4.25 ERA in 18 G (17 GS) with Round Rock. The 15th round selection of the Rangers in 2011 was also 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA over two starts with Frisco. In 2012, Eickhoff recorded 13 wins with Single-A Hickory, the second highest single-season total in franchise history.
