Thompson Recalled, Flurry of Roster Moves Announced

(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - Charlotte Knights outfielder Trayce Thompson, a 2015 International League All-Star, has been recalled to Chicago today, as announced by the White Sox. Thompson takes the roster spot of RHP Scott Carroll, who was optioned to Charlotte after Sunday's Chicago White Sox game. In two other roster moves, Charlotte catcher George Kottaras was released by Chicago, while catcher Rob Brantly has been promoted to Charlotte from Double-A Birmingham. Charlotte's active roster is set at 24 players.

Thompson becomes the ninth Charlotte Knights player promoted to Chicago this season. LHP Carlos Rodon (April 20), RHP Scott Carroll (April 26, June 18, & August 1), RHP Daniel Webb (April 26 & May 28), RHP Chris Beck (May 9 & May 28), infielder Carlos Sanchez (May 15), RHP Junior Guerra (June 7), infielder Tyler Saladino (July 10), and infielder/outfielder Leury Garcia (July 23 & July 29) are the others.

A native of Los Angeles, CA, Thompson has appeared in 104 games for the Knights this season and is hitting .260 (101-for-388) with 13 home runs and 39 RBIs. He is fourth in the International League in extra base hits (40), fourth in games played (104), and fifth in total bases (171). Defensively, the 24-year-old is tied for first among International League outfielders in games played (103), and ranks first in the IL in total chances (249), and putouts (243).

Originally drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the second round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft out of Santa Margarita Catholic High School, Thompson has compiled 101 career home runs over seven seasons in the minors. He is the son of 1978 NBA number one overall draft round pick Mychal Thompson, and is the brother of current Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson and Mychel Thompson, who played in the NBA with the Cleveland Cavaliers (2011-12).

Carroll, 30, is 4-2 with a 2.45 ERA in 10 starts for the Knights this season (51.1 IP). The St. Louis, MO native was recalled to Chicago on August 1 and pitched for the club on August 2. He owns a 1-1 record with a 3.41 ERA in 13 games (29.0 IP) with the White Sox over parts of three stints this season.

Brantly, 26, has posted a .325 batting average with 13 runs scored, six doubles, one triple, four home runs, and 22 RBIs over 30 games with the Birmingham Barons this season. A native of San Diego, CA, Brantly was acquired by the Chicago White Sox on December 8, 2014 when he was selected off waivers from the Miami Marlins. Brantly was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the third round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of California, Riverside.

Kottaras appeared in 31 games with the Knights this season and hit .241 (24-for-97) with seven home runs and 32 RBIs. From June 18 to June 21 -- a stretch of two games -- the Canadian native went 5-for-8 at the plate with three home runs and 12 RBIs after back-to-back games of six RBIs.
