Altoona Curve News Release
READING, Pa. - Tyler Cloyd kept the Altoona Curve off balance for seven shutout innings where he recorded ten strikeouts as the Curve fell to the Reading Phillies by the score of 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at FirstEnergy Stadium.
Cloyd ran into trouble in only the second inning as the bases were loaded with one down, but he rolled a double play to aid his superb day. He allowed only four hits and one walk on his afternoon.
For the second straight game the R-Phils jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Curve starter Mike Colla allowed a single before Carlos Rivero put the ball up into the wind and over the wall in left-center for a two-run home run. Reading added another run on a solo shot in the fourth from Brent Clevlen to take a 3-0 lead. The Phillies were held off the scoreboard the rest of the game.
Colla settled down and earned a quality start as he fired six innings and exited after allowing three runs on three hits with four strikeouts. On in relief, Duke Welker took over in the seventh and pitched two perfect innings to keep Reading at three.
The Curve got on the board in the eighth inning off Les Walrond as Starling Marte reached on a hustle double before back-to-back walks loaded the bases. With one down, Andrew Lambo hit an RBI groundout to cut the game to 3-1. With runners on second and third and two down, closer Justin Friend ended the inning with a strikeout and then worked out of the ninth where two batters reached to earn his ninth save of the season.
