Akron RubberDucks News Release
RICHMOND, VA - Right-handed pitcher Steve Wright allowed two earned runs in the bottom of the eighth inning that broke a scoreless tie and proved to be the difference as the Akron Aeros mustered just two hits and were shutout in the rubber match of a three-game series against the Richmond Flying Squirrels 2-0 Sunday at The Diamond.
Wright suffered the loss for Akron pitching seven innings, giving up three hits and striking out seven while walking just one.
Left-handed pitcher Eric Surkamp recorded the win for Richmond tossing eight scoreless innings, allowing just two hits, walking three and striking out four. Right-hander Heath Hembree retired the side in order in the top of the ninth inning to earn the save.
With the game scoreless in the bottom of the eighth inning, Wright gave up a lead off single to Wes Hodges, who advanced to second on a Kyle Bellows throwing error. Sharlon Shoop pinch ran for Hodges and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He scored on a Juan Perez single to give the Flying Squirrels (68-58) a 1-0 lead. Righty Cory Burns replaced Wright and, after a ground out that moved Perez to second, uncorked a wild pitch to move the runner to third. Skyler Stromsmoe singled home Perez as Richmond went on to the series win. Both runs were charged to Wright.
The Aeros (65-62) head to Bowie to begin a three-game series against the Baysox on Monday. Akron will give the ball to left-handed pitcher T.J. McFarland, who is 9-7 with a 3.87 ERA in 2011. He will face right-handed pitcher Oliver Drake, who is 1-2 with a 9.90 ERA this season. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. The game can be heard on Fox Sports 1350 AM or online at sportsradio1350.com. Coverage begins at 6:50 p.m.
