Gomes and Sobolewski Homer Sunday for Fisher Cats

New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release


(New Britain, CT)-Yan Gomes and Mark Sobolewski hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning, but the Fisher Cats dropped an 8-5 decision on Sunday in New Britain.

The Rock Cats (64-63) completed a three-game sweep of New Hampshire. New Britain opened a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Brian Dozier, who had doubled, scored on an error.

Joe Benson hit a two-run home run off Dustin McGowan (0-1) in the third for a 3-0 lead.

The Fisher Cats (69-58), with a four-game lead over second-place Reading with 15 games to play in the season, scored twice in the top of the fourth inning. Anthony Gose, who had walked, stole second and third and scored on a throwing error. Jonathan Diaz, who was hit by a pitch, scored on a groundout by Mike McDade to cut the lead to 3-2.

New Britain came back with three in the fourth for a 6-2 lead. McGowan walked Deibinson Romero and allowed a single to Danny Lehmann before leaving the game (3.1 IP- 6 H- 5 R- 4 ER). Dozier (2-for-5, 2 R, RBI) greeted reliever Wes Etheridge with a double. Lehmann scored on a groundout by Mike Hollimon.

Romero's two-run double in the fifth inning gave the Rock Cats an 8-2 lead.

Gomes hit his third home run of the current roadtrip and 12th of the season off winning pitcher Matt Schuld (1-2) in the top of the sixth and Sobolewski followed with his seventh of the season to make it 8-4.

New Hampshire closed to 8-5 in the top of the ninth inning. Gose walked and moved to second on a wild pitch. Diaz reached on an error and Travis d'Arnaud grounded out. Mike McDade then grounded out to end the game as Tyler Robertson earned his 15th save.

The Fisher Cats return to Northeast Delta Dental Stadium to begin the last homestand of the regular season on Monday night at 7:05pm to play Trenton (Yankees Double-A). An Atlas Fireworks Show will follow the game, fans can play USA Subs Baseball Bingo for great prizes, and it will be Hospitality Olympics Night as we pit local restaurants and hospitality organizations against each other in an Olympics style competition, sponsored by Performance Food Service NorthCenter. WMUR's Chronicle will celebrate its tenth anniversary.
