Iowa Cubs News Release
COLUMBUS, OH - The Columbus Clippers (13-14) took game one over the Iowa Cubs (16-9) by a score of 10-2, Wednesday at Huntington Park.
After last night's game was postponed due to wet grounds, Iowa got the scoring started early with an RBI single from Jake Slaughter to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Unfortunately for Iowa, that was the last time they would have the lead as Columbus scored 10 unanswered runs.
The Clippers used a grand slam from Chris Roller to get on the board in the second, taking a 4-1 lead. They grew their lead to 10-1 with three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings, respectively.
Roller hit his second home run of the day as part of their three-run fourth, a two-run shot, while Bo Naylor hit a solo home run highlighting their three-run fifth.
Iowa scored again in the seventh on an RBI groundout from Miles Mastrobuoni to make it 10-2, but that is all the scoring either side would see, as Columbus took the series opener.
POSTGAME NOTES:
Kyle Hendricks made his second start with Iowa on major league rehab, tossing 2.2 innings. He allowed four earned runs on two hits including a grand slam, while walking three and striking out three.
After totaling 49 runs in three of their last four games, Iowa was held to just two runs on three hits tonight. They had three different players each record one hit.
Tonight marked Iowa's first loss of the season to Columbus after sweeping them in a three-game series to open the season. The I-Cubs are now 4-2 in series openers.
Iowa and Columbus will play game two of their six-game series tomorrow, with first pitch from Huntington Park scheduled for 5:15 PM CT. You can listen to all Iowa Cubs games on Hope AM940 and stream them for free on the Bally Live App. For more information and tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
