TAMPA, Fla. - The Clearwater Threshers took advantage of an error and scored four runs in the third, and the Tampa Tarpons fell short of a comeback in a 5-3 final that evened the series on Friday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

RHP Miguel Yajure made his fourth start for Tampa (9-13) and stranded a pair of one-out singles in the first before working a 1-2-3 second. Clearwater (9-13) would open the scoring in the third, when Jose Gomez led off with a ground-rule double to right and Dalton Guthrie followed with an RBI single into center.

A flyout by Jhailyn Ortiz turned into a double-play when left-fielder Isiah Gilliam made the catch on the warning track, threw into the infield, and Guthrie was called out for rounding second base and not retouching the bag on his way back to first.

Madison Stokes kept the inning alive, reaching on a fielding error by shortstop Oswaldo Cabrera. Simon Muzziotti followed with a single to right, and both runners scored on a home run by Matt Vierling, giving Clearwater a 4-0 lead.

LHP Kyle Young retired six-straight batters to begin his fourth start with the Threshers. Donny Sands and Tyler Hill both singled in the third, but a double-play ended the inning. Tampa broke through in the third, when Matt Pita singled, stole second, advanced to third on a balk and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dermis Garcia, cutting the deficit to 4-1.

After retiring eight-straight batters, Yajure allowed a double by Vierling and issued a walk by Nick Maton with one out in the sixth. RHP Wellington Diaz entered in relief and, one out later, walked back-to-back hitters, forcing home Vierling to make it 5-1.

Yajure (L, 1-3) allowed five runs (two earned) on seven hits in five and a third innings, walking one while striking out four, throwing 64 of 98 pitches for strikes.

Young (W, 1-3) retired nine of the last 10 batters he faced while completing six innings for the second time this season. The 21-year-old held Tampa to one run on four hits, walking none while striking out six, throwing 52 of 78 pitches for strikes.

RHP Luis Carraso relieved Young in the seventh and recorded one out while walking five batters, forcing home a run. LHP Keylan Killgore entered and walked Hill to plate a second run before striking out Pablo Olivares and Pita, stranding the bases loaded.

Killgore (H, 1) tallied two more strikeouts in the eighth, stranding a leadoff single by Cabrera. LHP Jonathan Hennigan (SV, 4) worked a perfect ninth to close the game.

Diaz pitched three and two-third scoreless relief innings, allowing two hits and three walks while striking out one in his Tarpons debut. The 22-year-old, who celebrated his birthday on Thursday, was added to Tampa's roster from Extended Spring Training prior to the game.

Garcia (1-for-3, BB, Sac-F, RBI) tallied his league-leading 23rdRBI and extended his on-base streak to 12-straight games. Hill (1-for-3, BB, R) has hit safely in five-straight games.

RHP Rony Garcia (0-1, 2.45) is slated to start against RHP Andrew Brown (1-2, 7.50) when the series continues on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.Live play-by-play of the action will be available on the Tampa Tarpons Baseball Network.

On Strikeout Saturday, strikeouts by Tampa pitchers will determine the special of the day. When a Tarpons pitcher strikes out a batter, a select special will be activated for the night (each special lasts 60 minutes). In addition, fans can collect player autographs on the concourse from 5:40-6:00 p.m.
