Clearwater Threshers News Release

TAMPA, Fla. - The Clearwater Threshers bounced back from Thursday's loss with a 5-3 win over the Tampa Tarpons on Friday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field. The victory knots the four-game series at a game apiece heading into the weekend.

Clearwater (9-13) used a four-run third to grab the lead against Miguel Yajure (1-3). Jose Gomez extended his hitting streak to seven by ripping a ground-rule double to right to lead off the frame, and came around to score on Dalton Guthrie's bouncer over second for the 1-0 edge.

After a double play cleared the bases, Madison Stokes reached on an error to keep the inning alive, and Simon Muzziotti poked a single through the hole on the right side to set up Matt Vierling's three-run homer.

The cushion would be plenty of space for Kyle Young (1-3) to work with on the night, as the southpaw yielded just one run through six frames for his second quality start of the season. The Philadelphia Phillies' 17th-ranked prospect (MLB.com) scattered four hits and punched out six. The 6-foot-10 hurler has issued just one free pass this season, while setting down 25 men on strikes through 21 innings of work.

Gomez added an insurance run with an RBI, bases-loaded-walk in the sixth inning against reliever Wellington Diaz.

Tampa (9-13) made things interesting against Clearwater's bullpen in the seventh, pushing across two runs to cut the lead down to 5-3.

Luis Carrasco struggled with command out of the gate, issuing four walks to the five batters the reliever faced. Keylan Killgore came in with the bags full of Tarpons and walked home a run, but struck out Pablo Olivares and Matt Pita to limit the damage.

Jonathan Hennigan (SV, 4) earned his fourth save in as many chances with a perfect ninth.

Clearwater will look to gain the advantage on Saturday night in game three of the four-game set. It has yet to be determined who will take the mound for the Threshers against the Tarpons' RHP Rony Garcia (0-1, 2.45). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., with coverage starting at 6:15 p.m. with Threshers Live! The Pregame Show on threshersbaseball.com.
