Daytona Tortugas News Release
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Unfortunately, all streaks are meant to be broken. Daytona's seven-game win streak was snapped, as the Bradenton Marauders eked out a 4-3 victory over the Daytona Tortugas in front of 2,750 fans at Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Friday night.
Tied at three after four, Bradenton (14-8) worked consecutive two-out walks to ignite a rally. 3B Dylan Busby (0-4) proceeded to tap a ground ball to short. The ball kicked off the heel of the fielder's mitt and rolled into left field. RF Cal Mitchell (1-2, 2 R, HR, RBI, 3 BB, SO) scored from second with the go-ahead run to put the Marauders in front, 4-3.
The Tortugas (12-10) would threaten in the eighth and ninth innings - putting the tying run in scoring position in both frames - however, they could not complete the rally. RHP Joel Cesar (1.0 IP, H) tossed a scoreless ninth to garner his fourth save of the season.
It was a positive start for Daytona, as they jumped out in front in the bottom of the first. Following a two-out single and a stolen base by DH Alejo Lopez (1-4, R, SO), 3B Jonathan India (1-3, R, 2B, RBI, BB) smacked a base-hit down the right field line. The 22-year-old scooted into second with an RBI double to give the Tortugas a 1-0 edge.
Bradenton then rattled off three-straight runs to take the lead. 2B Robbie Glendinning (1-4, R, HR, RBI, SO) led off the second with a solo home run - his second of the year - to right to tie it at one. With men at first and third and one out later in the frame, CF Daniel Amaral (0-5, RBI) hit a bouncer to third. The former UCLA Bruin was thrown out at first, but a run crossed to put the Marauders ahead, 2-1.
In the third, Mitchell hit a fly ball to right that hooked around the foul pole for a solo home run. The blast - his fourth of the campaign - extended Bradenton's advantage to 3-1.
Daytona managed to tie it up briefly in the bottom of the fourth. India would walk to start the attack and move to third on a double by 1B Bruce Yari (3-4, R, 2B). After a strikeout and a pop out, RF Andy Sugilio (1-4, 2 RBI, SO) clocked a two-RBI single to right to even the game up at three.
RHP Aaron Shortridge (5.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO) yielded three runs on seven hits but collected his third win of the year for Bradenton. The unearned run in the fifth was a back-breaker for RHP Ryan Lillie (4.2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 2 SO), as the Daytona starter suffered his first defeat of 2019.
The Tortugas will look to get back in the win column on Saturday evening. LHP Packy Naughton (2-1, 1.90 ERA) - Cincinnati's No. 21 prospect per MLB.com - is slated to take the ball for Daytona in game three of the series. Bradenton is projected to counter with LHP Oddy Nuñez (0-1, 4.95 ERA).
The Tortugas Pre-Game Show will kick off the broadcast at 6:50 p.m. ET, leading up to the 7:05 p.m. ET start at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Saturday evening's game can be heard on daytonatortugas.com or via the TuneIn Radio and MiLB First Pitch apps.
First Responder Weekend will continue at Jackie Robinson Ballpark tomorrow, as gates will open an hour early at 4:30 p.m. so fans can cheer on local heroes in the Tortugas' annual Guns N' Hoses Softball Game. It will be a Shell-tastic Saturday at The Jack, as following the final out patrons will be treated to a marvelous Postgame Fireworks display.
Season ticket and multi-game plans are still currently available and can be purchased online at www.daytonatortugas.com, or by calling the Tortugas' Ticket Office at (386) 257-3172.
