Brampton Steelheads News Release
Mississauga, ON - The Windsor Spitfires were in town for their only visit to the Hershey Centre this year. Tonight's game also marked the return of defenceman Eric Diodati, who was traded toWindsor earlier this season. Diodati spent the last two full seasons in Mississauga and has played 110 games with the franchise.
The Steelheads flew out of the gate early on in this one, as Jared Walsh opened the scoring on the power play at 6:20 of the first. Walsh's point shot beat Spitfires goalie Alex Fotinos to give the Trout a 1-0 lead. Walsh's goal was his 3rd of the season with assists going to Bryson Cianfrone and Stefan LeBlanc. The Steelheads would strike again on the power play with just under a minute left in the first period. Andrew Goldberg jumped on a loose puck, scoring his 12th goal of the season to give the Steelheads a two-goal advantage; assists went to Josh Burnside and Cianfrone. The shots on goal at the end of the first were 14-7 in favour of the Steelheads.
The Spitfires would be first to the scoreboard in the second as Sam Povorozniouk beat a screened Spencer Martin to cut the Steelheads lead to 2-1. Steven Janes and Ben Johnson drew the assists on Povorozniouk's 14th of the year. After a huge glove save by Martin to keep the Steelheads up, the Steelheads would strike again on the power play. This time Captain Brett Foy walked out from behind the net, beating Fotinos for his 10th goal of the year and 3rd power play marker of the game for the Steelheads. Assists on the Foy goal went to Burnside and Cianfrone. After two periods of play the Steelheads lead 3-1.
Looking to preserve their 2 goal lead, the Steelheads would put the penalty kill to the test in the third. After killing off their first minor penalty, the Spitfires would take advantage this time as Trevor Murphy scored his 7th goal of the year to cut the Steelheads lead to 1. With the Spitfires pushing to tie game, Spencer Martin stood tall to preserve the lead and close out the victory for the Steelheads. Final shots on goal were 29-27 in favour of Windsor.
Cianfrone's 3 assists would earn him first star honours, with Burnside 2nd and Windsor's Sam Povorozniouk 3rd. Burnside's efforts also earned him the Ryobi Hardest Working Player of the game.
The Steelheads return to the Hershey Centre on Sunday for the annual Pink at the Rink game presented by your local State Farm agents. Fans are encouraged to wear pink as we help raise funds and awareness for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. The game will feature a number of in-game fundraisers including a commemorative pink jersey auction.
