Chiefs with 78 Shots, Win 2-1 in Shootout
March 17, 2011 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Spokane Chiefs News Release
The Spokane Chiefs put a franchise record 78 shots on net only to score one goal in regulation. It took two goals in two chances in the shootout to propel Spokane to their season high eighth straight win of the season, a 2-1 decision over Chilliwack on Wednesday night in the Spokane Arena. Bruins goaltender Lucas Gore earned first star honors with 77 saves.
Spokane remains one point back of the Portland Winterhawks for first place in the Western Conference with three games remaining in the regular season.
Matt Marantz's 19th of the season on a rebound of a Steven Kuhn shot from the slot at 8:52 of the third period tied the game on Spokane's 60th shot. The Bruins' Ryan Howse had previously scored with just three seconds remaining in the second period to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead. The Chiefs had outshot Chilliwack 32-8 in the period.
The Chiefs were 0-5 on the power play including missing on a two man advantage for the final 1:25 of overtime. Spokane finished the night 4-4 on the penalty kill.
It counted as Spokane's second straight win in a shootout following last Saturday's five round affair with the Kootenay Ice. The Chiefs were a perfect 2-2 with goals by Tyler Johnson and Blake Gal while James Reid snuffed out both Chilliwack attempts.
Spokane had originally set their previous record for shots on goal with 75 on March 17th, 1996 in a 6-0 win over the Prince George Cougars. With Chilliwack's 23 the Chiefs also broke their franchise record of 96 combined shots by two teams with a total of 101.
Spokane has one home game left in the regular season when they host the Seattle Thunderbirds on Coca-Cola's Regular Season Finale Friday night at 7:00.
Tickets are available by calling the Chiefs office at (509) 535-PUCK or TicketsWest at (800) 325-SEAT.
