Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs used a tenth inning, RBI single from Elliot Soto to pull through in a back-and-forth game and defeat the Lake County Captains, 6-5 on Friday night. With the victory, the Chiefs took two of the three games of the series and improve to 42-49 on the season.
For the second night in a row, the Captains led after the first half inning as Lake County grabbed a 1-0 lead against Chiefs' right-hander Starling Peralta. After two quick strikeouts, Jordan Casas reached on a throwing error by Peralta and moved to second when the ball bounced into foul territory. Jesus Aguilar put the Captains on top, and continued to frustrate Peoria, with a RBI double that bounced off the left field wall.
A three-run second inning against Captains' starter Kirk Wetmore allowed the Chiefs to bounce back and grab their first lead of the game. Richard Jones led off with a double to straightaway center field and moved to third when Elliot Soto grounded out. After Ben Klafczynski walked, Brandon May evened the game at 1-1 with a RBI sacrifice fly to left. Sergio Burruel extended the frame with a base hit to right before Rubi Silva made it 3-1 with a two-run double to center.
Not to be outdone, the Captains returned the favor with a three-run inning of their own in the third. Moises Montero led off with his first homer of the season that carried well beyond the left field wall for a 3-2 ballgame. Carlos Moncrief followed with a bunt single before LeVon Washington and Aguilar loaded the bases with back-to-back walks. With two down, Ronny Rodriguez regained the lead for Lake County with a two-run single to left.
After a pair of scoreless innings, the Chiefs answered in the sixth and grabbed their second advantage of the game. Greg Rohan lined a single into center field to begin the inning and Jones went the other way for his team-leading 17th homer of the year and eighth this season at home. His two-run shot cleared the left-center field wall and gave Peoria a 5-4 lead.
As Yohan Gonzalez entered the game to begin the eighth inning, Lake County leveled the score once again with one run against the righty. Giovanny Urshela led off with a base hit to left and moved to second when Gonzalez balked. Ronny Rodriguez laid down a sac bunt and advanced the runner to third. With one out, Brian Heere was hit by a pitch and Nick Bartolone made it 5-5 with a RBI groundout to first that scored Urshela.
The Chiefs won the game in the 10th against reliever Joey Mahalic. Cuneo lifted a single into left and Rohan laid down a sacrifice bunt. Jones was intentionally walked before Soto bounced a base hit up the middle for the game-winning run.
Peralta allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits in five innings of work. He walked two batters, allowed one homer, and struck out three in a no-decision. Pete Levitt entered the game in the sixth inning and allowed just one hit in two scoreless innings. He did not allow a walk and struck out two hitters in his most successful outing with the Chiefs. Gonzalez (4-3) earned the win with one run allowed on two hits in two innings of work. He walked one and struck out two batters.
