River Bandits rally to defeat Dayton

Davenport, Iowa-Victor Sanchez belted a three-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to cap a five-run frame as the Quad Cities River Bandits rallied to defeat the Dayton Dragons 6-4 on Friday night. The Dragons, who led 4-0 after six innings, suffered their first series loss of the second half as Quad Cities took two-out-of-three in the set.

The Dragons were 42-1 on the season when leading after seven innings, but saw the River Bandits score all six runs against the Dayton bullpen over two innings. Dragons closer Drew Hayes, who was 14 for 14 in save situations this season and had not allowed a run over his last 16 appearances, surrendered the home run to Sanchez and suffered the loss.

Dragons starting pitcher Daniel Renken did not allow a hit over six scoreless innings as the Dragons built the lead. Dayton scored in the second inning when they got three consecutive singles by David Vidal, Jaren Matthews, and Juan Duran to bring in a run. In the fourth, Duran singled home Vidal with two outs to make it 2-0.

Dayton added two more runs in the fifth. After walks to Jefry Sierra and Billy Hamilton, the Dragons pulled off a double steal before Ronald Torreyes singled to left to drive in two runs and give the Dragons a 4-0 lead.

Renken left with the no-hitter alive after six innings. Luca Panerati allowed two hits and one run in the seventh, and Pat Doyle surrendered three runs in the eighth. Hayes replaced Doyle with the Dragons leading 4-3 and a runner at second and two outs. He issued a walk to Cody Stanley before Sanchez belted his first homer of the year in his 186th at-bat to give the River Bandits the lead. The Dragons were retired in order in the ninth.

The Dragons finished with nine hits. Vidal was 3 for 4 and Duran was 2 for 4 to lead the Dragons.

The Dragons (14-7, 49-42) continue the road trip when they open a new three-game series against the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Saturday at 7:35 p.m. (EDT) (980 WONE). Kyle Lotzkar (1-1, 5.74) will start for Dayton against P.J. Jang (0-1, 3.68).

The next home game is Wednesday, July 20. On July 23, the Dragons and their fans will enjoy a celebration at Fifth Third Field in relation to the Dragons setting the all-time sports record for consecutive sell-outs.
