JOLIET, Ill. - Joey Scumaci struck out a career-high nine over eight innings and the Rockford RiverHawks rallied in the ninth inning to beat the Joliet Slammers, 2-1, on Friday at Silver Cross Field.
The RiverHawks rallied for two runs, one unearned, off Joliet closer Ryan Quigley in the top of the ninth. In the bottom of the ninth, Rockford closer Brett Durand escaped a bases-loaded threat for his 10th save.
Scumaci (3-0) scattered six hits, including a second-inning homer by Kyle Maunus, and walked three for the win.
In the top of the ninth inning, David Cooper led off with a walk and stole second base. Quigley (0-2) struck out Jake Eigsti and Jason James, but James reached first base on a passed ball that also advanced Cooper to third. Matt Greener singled home Cooper and sent James to third on a blooper to center field. Greener took second base on the throw to third. Luis Parache was intentionally walked to load the bases and Jamal Carrington walked to force in James with the go-ahead run.
Joliet starter Ryne Miller struck out seven over seven scoreless innings in a no-decision. He had a no-hitter until Cooper's two-out single to left-center in the sixth inning.
The series continues at 6:05 p.m. Saturday.
The RiverHawks' next home game is at 7:05 p.m. July 21, when they host Washington on a Miller Lite/RBI's Thirsty Thursday.
