GENEVA, Ill. - Five hurlers combined for a three-hit shutout as the Peoria Chiefs claimed the rubber game of a three-game series with a 2-0 victory over the Kane County Cougars on Monday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.
Ben Wells started the ballgame for the Chiefs (26-32) but left with an apparent injury after just two innings. Luis Liria (1-0) took over in the third and kept the shutout rolling as did three others including Larry Suarez, Sheldon McDonald and Yao-Lin Wang (S, 5).
Kane County (30-28) only managed three singles in the ballgame with just one man reaching third base as Justin Trapp got there in the first inning but was left there. Peoria grabbed the advantage against Brooks Pounders (3-2) in the top of the third as Pin-Chieh Chen singled and advanced to second on an error by Jorge Bonifacio.
Chen crossed the plate after a base hit by Zeke DeVoss. Peoria added another tally in the sixth inning with an RBI groundout from Oliver Zapata to score Yasiel Balaguert. Balaguert reached on a fielder's choice and ended up at third after a Javier Baez double. Pounders lasted six frames while fanning six. Cody Fassold tossed a pair of scoreless innings while Nick Graffeo hung a zero in the ninth.
