Great Lakes Loons News Release

MIDLAND, MI - The Great Lakes Loons lost their fifth consecutive game on Monday night at Dow Diamond, falling 3-1 to the West Michigan Whitecaps, who completed the three-game sweep. The loss drops the Loons record to 28-30 and has the team three games out of second place, which is the last spot that qualifies or the playoffs with 13 games to go in the season's first half.

Ryan O'Sullivan made his seventh start of the season for the Loons and ran into trouble early. The California-native allowed a double to the Whitecaps Eugenio Suarez and then tossed two wild pitches to advance Suarez each time and give West Michigan their first run. The Whitecaps scored again in the inning on a pair of Loons errors that made it 2-0.

Despite the early miscues, O'Sullivan settled in to pitch eight innings for the Loons and turn in his fifth quality start in seven tries, fanning eight Whitecaps and walking none. A second unearned run came across on O'Sullivan's watch in the fourth inning, resulting from an Angelo Songco throwing error that extended the inning. O'Sullivan's season ERA drops from 3.42 to 3.10 in the loss. Juan Noriega closed out the game for the Loons, picking up a strikeout in the ninth.

The Loons only run came in the first inning, the result of a Joe Winker double. Winker finished the night 2-for-4. Great Lakes out-hit the Whitecaps 9-5, with Scott Schebler and Pratt Maynard also nabbing a pair of base hits in the contest.

Prior to the game, the Midwest League announced its list of All-Stars, (attached to this release) which included two players from the Great Lakes Loons: infielder Joe Winker and starting pitcher Jarret Martin. As of June 4, Winker (.254) is tied for the most doubles in the league with 20 and ranks fourth with 27 extra-base hits. Martin (3.79 ERA) has continuously topped the Midwest League's strikeout leaderboard and currently ranks second with 63.

"I was excited," Martin said after hearing of his nomination. "It's nice to be honored for playing well and it's a great honor to be recognized amongst the best in this league."

The Loons have their first June off-day on Tuesday, where they will participate in the 4th Annual Swing With the Loons Golf Tournament, presented by Chemical Bank, taking place at Bucks Run Golf Club. On Wednesday, the team hits the road for a six-game trip to South Bend and Grand Rapids. The Loons will return to Dow Diamond on Tuesday, June 12, to conclude their playoff push with a six-game homestand before the All-Star Break.

The Great Lakes Loons are a sixth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and are in the middle of their 5th Anniversary Celebration, which kicked off in August 2011 and will continue throughout the 2012 season.
