Kane County Cougars News Release

PEORIA, Ill. - The first two games of the series between the Kane County Cougars (38-20) and Peoria Chiefs (31-26) featured good starting pitching and a close game late into the ball game, Monday was no different. Peoria took the rubber game against the Cougars by a score of 5-3 to move 6.5 games behind the Cougars in the Midwest League's West Division standings.

The game was scoreless through the first four innings thanks to solid pitching from Duane Underwood and Rob Kaminsky. Trey Martin also flashed some leather with a home run robbing catch on Carson Kelly's fly ball to left field in the first inning.

The Cougars struck first in the fifth inning, when Carlos Penalver led off the frame with a single. Kaminsky's attempt to pick off Penalver went wild and he made it to third base safely. With two outs, Jake Hannemann singled Penalver home for a 1-0 Cougars' lead.

The Chiefs quickly answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Kenny Peoples-Walls doubled and scored on Steve Bean's single. The inning continued with Mason Katz's single and Michael Schulze reaching on an error. With the bases loaded, Peoria scored two more runs on Richy Pedroza's sacrifice fly and CJ McElroy's single for a 3-1 lead.

Hannemann punched in another run with a two-out RBI double in the seventh. His two-bagger scored Daniel Lockhart who doubled two batters earlier.

Once again Peoria answered with runs in the home half on Pedroza's RBI single and a walk to Carson Kelly with the bases loaded. After seven innings it was 5-2 Chiefs.

The last effort made by the Cougars came in the eighth frame when Cael Brockmeyer flied out to left to sacrifice Ben Carhart home, but it was the final scoring play of the game as the Cougars fell 5-3.

Kaminsky (1-1) earned the win allowing two runs, one earned, on seven hits through six and two-third innings. Underwood (1-2) suffered the loss as Steve Sabatino picked up his first save.

The Cougars now will enjoy an off day before heading back to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark for a six-game home stand beginning with a three-game series against the Clinton LumberKings. For tickets call 630-232-8811 or log onto kccougars.com.
