Kernels rally falls short in loss to Bees

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA -The Cedar Rapids Kernels fell 6-4 to the Burlington Bees in the rubber-match of the series Monday afternoon at Perfect Game at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Jason Kanlzer recorded two RBIs and three hits in the contest while teammates Chad Christensen and Tanner Vavra each added a run-batted-in. Mitch Garver scored a run and collected two hits while Chris Mazza threw three scoreless stanzas out of relief.

Bees hitters took advantage of the wind blowing out and slammed three solo homeruns in the first five innings.

Burlington swung the bats early in the game taking a 2-0 lead after the first inning. Chad Hinshaw doubled in Kody Eaves and was later brought in by a Brandon Bayardi single to take the early lead.

The Kernels cut the mark in half in the bottom of the second when Jason Kanzler singled Bryan Haar to the plate making the score 2-1.

The Bees stung back immediately in the third when Bayardi brought in Hinshaw for his second RBI on a one-out single to push the advantage to 3-1.

Fresh off the disabled-list, Ryan Dalton made the score 4-1 by opening the fourth inning with a solo blast over the left field wall.

Garrett Nuss left the mound for Burlington after 3 1/3 innings while allowing one run on four hits and walking four batters.

Brian Loconsole (4-0) entered in the middle of the fourth and threw 1 2/3 scoreless frames while walking one and striking out one.

Eaves and Hinshaw hit back-to-back homers to begin the fifth inning to increase the Burlington lead to 6-1.

Cedar Rapids starter Derrick Penilla (1-2) exited after five frames on the mound. The left-hander allowed six runs on six hits while striking out two and walking one in his seventh start of the year.

Chris Mazza pitched out of the bullpen for the Kernels in the fifth and tossed three scoreless frames while striking out one and giving up two hits.

Daniel Hurtado worked the sixth inning for the Bees and surrendered three hits in his lone shutout inning.

The Kernels loaded the bases off three consecutive hits to begin the sixth by Garver, Haar and Kanzler, but were unable to score.

Right-hander Spencer Trygg threw the seventh for Burlington and tallied a walk and a strikeout in his single inning of work.

Ben Carlson toed the rubber in the eighth for the visiting team and surrendered one run while fanning two during his one-inning outing.

Cedar Rapids edged closer 6-2 in the bottom of the eighth when Jason Kanzler scored off a two-out RBI-double by Tanner Vavra. Kanzler reached base by a dropped-ball error by right fielder Renyelmy Mendoza to begin the inning.

Hudson Boyd made a one-frame appearance in the ninth for the Kernels on the mound and shut down the Bees in order giving up no hits.

Left-hander Cole Swanson began the ninth inning out of the bullpen for Burlington and allowed two runs on three hits during his 2/3 of an inning.

Alan Busenitz closed the game for the Bees by throwing the final 1/3 inning and gave up one hit while earning his seventh save of the year in the 6-4 victory.

Chad Christensen knocked his fifth homer out of the park with one out in the ninth to make the score 6-3. Mitch Garver was plated by a two-out single by Kanzler to make it a two-score game, but the rally ended thereafter.

The Kernels have an off day Tuesday and will open a three-game stint against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on the road from June 4-6 followed by three games in Kane County against the Cougars from June 7-9. Cedar Rapids returns home from June 10-12 to square off with the Quad Cities River Bandits in a three-game set and will host the Burlington Bees from June 13-15 to end the first half.

RHP Aaron Slegers (5-2, 4.95) is schedule to open the series at Wisconsin on Wednesday at 6:35 p.m.
