PEORIA, Ill. - For committing five errors in one ball game the Chiefs still made it a close call against the Cougars Sunday night. The Cougars (38-19) shutout Peoria (30-26) by a score of 2-0 to even up the series 1-1.

Peoria's hitters combined for 13 strikeouts as the Cougars' pitching began with five and two-third shutout innings from Justin Amlung and finished off with three and one-third scoreless frames from Michael Wagner and Tyler Bremer.

It was a defensive mishap by the Chiefs that allowed the first run to score as Daniel Lockhart hit a ground ball to Peoria's shortstop Juan Herrera. Herrera didn't glove it cleanly and Trey Martin scored from third base.

The Cougars doubled their lead in the fifth inning when Ben Carhart tripled with one out. Yasiel Balaguert followed up with a sacrifice fly to left field for a 2-0 Cougars' advantage.

There would be no more scoring in the ball game as Amlung, Wagner and Bremer stranded seven base runners in the final four innings. The Chiefs stranded a total of eleven base runners throughout the evening.

Amlung (4-0) earned the win tying a Cougars' season-high of eight strike outs. Blake McKnight (1-5) suffered the loss with one earned run through six innings. Bremer pick up his team leading fifth save.

The series concludes on Monday from Peoria with a 7:00 p.m. first pitch. Duane Underwood (1-1, 2.52) will take the mound for the Cougars against the Chiefs' left-hander Rob Kaminsky (0-1, 1.83). The game can be heard on AM 1280 WBIG and kccougars.com.
