Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
PEORIA, Ill. - A long Tuesday at Dozer Park which included a 93-minute rain delay ended with the Peoria Chiefs defeating the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 7-2. More than four hours elapsed between the game's first and final pitches as Cedar Rapids (45-40) ultimately fell in its first road game against Peoria (33-52) since June 23, 2019.
A five-run third inning launched Peoria to a 5-0 lead. Masyn Winn tripled and scored on Jordan Walker's single. Three batters later, Leandro Cedeno singled to drive in Walker and Pedro Pages. After the Chiefs loaded the bases, Tyler Reichenborn drew a run-scoring walk, and Matt Chamberlain hit a sacrifice fly.
The Kernels broke up the shutout within the top of the fourth. Edouard Julien led off with a single and stole second base prior to coming home when Matt Wallner delivered an RBI double and brought Cedar Rapids within 5-1.
Peoria increased its lead to 6-1 in its half of the fourth. Walker doubled to open the frame and advanced to third base on a groundout from Jhon Torres. Pages followed by collecting a single that plated Walker. At the end of the inning, rain temporarily halted play.
Two late tallies split between Peoria and Cedar Rapids left the Chiefs with their winning margin of 7-2. During the bottom of the eighth, Torres scored an unearned run via Moises Castillo's RBI single. Yunior Severino posted the final run for the Kernels on a leadoff solo shot within the ninth.
Sean Kealey (1-0) picked up the victory, and Tyler Watson (2-3) was charged for the loss. Kealey tossed three scoreless and hitless innings of relief while protecting a 6-1 advantage. Watson gave up five runs over 2.1 innings pitched in a starting role.
Game two of this six-game series between Cedar Rapids and Peoria will start at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday evening at Dozer Park, and the probable pitchers are Kernels right-hander Ben Gross (4-1, 3.27) and Chiefs right-hander Wilfredo Pereira (2-6, 3.79).
