Chiefs Defeat Kernels, Mother Nature Tuesday Night
August 11, 2021 - Midwest League (MWL)
Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL - After a rain delay of more than 90 minutes, the Chiefs beat the elements and the Cedar Rapids Kernels in a 7-2 defeat Tuesday night. Tuesday's win marked the first victory against the Kernels since May 6.
Peoria drew first blood in a big way in the bottom of the third inning, scoring five runs on four hits. Masyn Winn led off the inning with a stand-up triple to right field. Jordan Walker followed it up with a single up the middle to drive in the first run of the game. A double from Pedro Pages put runners on second and third base for the Chiefs. The two men were driven in by a single off the bat of Leandro Cedeno. His 36th and 37th RBI's extended Peoria's advantage to 3-0. An RBI walk and a sacrifice fly from Matt Chamberlain capped off the inning for the Chiefs.
Cedar Rapids scored a run in the fourth inning only to be erased by a Peoria tally in the bottom of the fourth. A Pedro Pages single scored Walker from third and made it 5-1. Walker finished the night with three hits and he scored a pair of runs.
Before Peoria starter Connor Lunn could head to the mound for the fifth inning to complete an official contest, the rains came and delayed the game for more than 90 minutes. Lunn did not return following the delay and his streak of four consecutive quality starts was snapped.
Upon resumption, the Chiefs bullpen did the job. Sean Kealey picked up his first win in a Chiefs uniform, as he hurled three shutout innings. Leonardo Taveras twirled a clean eighth inning to put up a fourth-straight zero.
The teams traded runs late in the contest. Moises Castillo drove in a run for Peoria in his first game back from the injured list. In the top of the ninth, a Cedar Rapids homer created the final margin.
The series continues tomorrow. Wilfredo Pereira will go for the Chiefs. First pitch is slated for 6:35 p.m. at Dozer Park.
