Chiefs Lose 5-1 at Miller Park Wednesday

Milwaukee, WI - The Peoria Chiefs allowed a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning and fell 5-1 to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Wednesday night at Miller Park in Milwaukee. The loss ends a two-game winning streak and moves the Chiefs to 2-4 on the half and 35-41 on the season.

The Chiefs got the first hit of the game as Rubi Silva tripled to the right-center wall in the top of the first. But back-to-back groundouts from Greg Rohan and Richard Jones kept the Chiefs off the board. Wisconsin took advantage in their half of the first against Chiefs All-Star Austin Kirk. T.J. Mittlestaedt drew a leadoff walk and Nick Shaw beat out a sacrifice bunt to put two on with no outs. Kirk struck out Michael Walker but Greg Hopkins cleared the left-field fence for a 3-run home run his third of the season. Kirk struck out Chris Dennis and Cody Hawn to end the inning with Wisconsin on top 3-0.

Peoria got on the board against Brooks Hall in the fourth inning. Silva reached on a bunt single and Greg Rohan launched a ground-rule double to center. After a strikeout by Richard Jones, Micah Gibbs got the Chiefs on the board with a sacrifice fly to left before Hall escaped the inning up 3-1.

The Chiefs left runners on base in the sixth and seventh innings before Wisconsin added insurance runs against Yohan Gonzalez. Nick Shaw drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Shaw went to third on a groundout and scored on a single by Greg Hopkins for a 4-1 Rattlers lead. With two down and Hopkins on second, Larry Suarez relieved Gonzalez and allowed a double to Cody Hawn as Wisconsin took a 5-1 lead.

Kirk (4-5) allowed three runs on six hits over four innings while taking the loss, his third in a row. Kirk struck out four, walked two and hit one. Gonzalez allowed two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out four and throwing a wild pitch. Suarez struck out one and allowed one hit in 1 1/3 shutout innings of work.

Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Rubi Silva (RF) - Silva tripled in the first but was left at first and singled before scoring the lone run in the fourth. He also turned in a diving catch in right field and finished the game 2-for-4.
