Peoria Chiefs News Release

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs and Chicago Cubs have announced that right-handed pitcher Daniel Berlind has been added to the roster ahead of the Wednesday night Miller Park contest against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. The roster move leaves the Chiefs with 24 players, one shy of the Midwest League roster limit.

Berlind, 23, was a seventh round pick by the Minnesota Twins in 2007 out of Los Angeles Pierce Junior College and he pitched in the MWL with Beloit in 2008 and 2009. Berlind was released by the Twins in 2010 and signed by the Cubs in June 2011. He pitched in the Independent CanAm League in 2010 with Sussex going 2-3 with a 6.43 ERA in 14 games and 12 starts. Berlind was 4-4 with Beloit in 11 games and 10 starts in 2008 with a 6.43 ERA. He returned to Beloit for the entire 2009 season going 5-13 with a 2.12 ERA in 31 games and 21 starts. In his second stint in the MWL Berlind threw two complete games and recorded two saves while striking out 97 batters in 128 2/3 innings. Berlind was 6-2 in nine starts for the GCL Twins in 2007 as an All-Star and 2-3 with a 2.12 ERA in 14 games and eight starts for Rookie Ball Elizabethton in 2008.

With Beloit in 2009, Berlind started against the Chiefs three times going 0-0 with a 4.02 ERA. In those outings he struck out 18 and walked nine in 15 2/3 innings while allowing a home run to Josh Vitters. Berlind did not face the Chiefs in his 11 outings with Beloit in 2008.

A native of Calabasas, CA, Berlind was drafted by the Cubs in the 44th round of the 2006 draft before going to Junior College instead. He attended the same Junior College as former Chiefs OF Coco Crisp and San Francisco Giants hurler Barry Zito. At LA Pierce, Berlind was the 2007 Western State South All-Conference Pitcher of the year.
