South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

Comstock Park, MI - Due to an odd schedule quirk that saw the South Bend Silver Hawks and West Michigan Whitecaps play each other for six straight games to start the second half, Wednesday's matchup featured the same starting pitching matchup and the exact same 2-1 final score as Friday's game between the two teams in South Bend.

The similarities are just beginning however. On Friday in South Bend, Silver Hawks starter Jeff Shields (LP, 4-8) allowed two runs on five hits with four strikeouts in six innings. Wednesday in Comstock Park, Shields took another tough loss by allowing two runs on five hits with four strikeouts, only this time he went seven innings.

On Friday in South Bend, West Michigan starter Alex Burgos (WP, 3-1) allowed one run on four hits with six strikeouts in 6.2 innings. Wednesday in Comstock Park, Burgos recorded another win allowing just one run on four hits and six strikeouts, and this time around he lasted 8.0 innings.

Friday in South Bend, Bruce Rondon (SV, 13) recorded the final three outs for a save, and yes, you guessed it, Rondon recorded the final three outs Wednesday night for the save again.

Like Friday, West Michigan scored both of their runs in an early inning. The Whitecaps scored two in the second on Friday night, but waited until the third inning on Wednesday to score their two runs, receiving RBIs from Luis Castillo and Rob Brantly.

South Bend's lone run on Wednesday came in the top of the ninth inning when Burgos walked leadoff hitter Yazy Arbelo. He eventually advanced to third on two walks from Rondon, and scored on a Gerson Montilla sacrifice fly.

One more similarity: West Michigan finished both Friday's and Wednesday's game with two runs, six hits, and four runners left on base.

South Bend continues the road trip with three in Eastlake, Ohio against the Lake County Captains (Cleveland Indians) beginning on Thursday night at 7:00 PM Eastern Time. RHP Bradin Hagens (4-3, 4.58 ERA) will return to the mound for the Silver Hawks against LHP Mike Rayl (5-2, 1.71 ERA) for Lake County. Pre-game coverage begins at 6:40 PM Eastern Time on www.sportsjuice.com and www.silverhawks.com.
