Cougars Drop Finale, Snap Win Streak

BURLINGTON, Iowa - The Kane County Cougars saw their season-best five-game win streak come to an end on Wednesday night as they fell, 9-5, against the Burlington Bees at Community Field. Despite the loss in the finale, the Cougars won both series on their six-game road trip to open the 2nd half, sweeping Peoria and taking two of three in Burlington.

Yordano Ventura (2-3) took the loss. He gave up two first-inning runs, giving the Cougars their first deficit in 44 2/3 innings. The Cougars rallied to grab a 3-2 lead in the third. Brett Eibner launched a two-run homer, and Angel Franco connected on a two-out RBI single. Then the Bees batted around in the fourth, scored four runs and never looked back. Ventura walked three straight hitters and gave up two hits before departing, and Mitch Hodge allowed two inherited runners to score for a 6-3 game. Ventura gave up six runs on seven hits in three-plus innings in the loss. It was the first time in the last seven games a Cougars starting pitcher yielded more than two earned runs.

The Cougars fought back after the rough fourth inning, as Franco led off the fifth with his first homer of of the year and Eibner led off the sixth with his second homer of the game to cut it to, 6-5. The Cougars hit 12 homers during the six-game road trip, and Eibner hit four. Hodge worked a perfect sixth inning but then served up a three-run homer to Douglas Landaeta in the seventh as the Bees pulled away, 9-5.

The Cougars (5-1, 33-42) take the field Thursday night at 6:30 CT when they start a six-game home stand at Elfstrom Stadium with the opener of a three-game set against the Beloit Snappers (5-1, 43-33). Jason Adam (2-3, 4.39) is scheduled to face Manuel Soliman (2-4, 4.18). The game will be broadcast on WBIG 1280-AM and online via kccougars.com with pregame coverage starting at 6:15 p.m.

- Ryan Stovall has hit safely in 14 of his last 15 games and 21 of his last 23. He hasn't gone hitless in consecutive games since May 19-20.

- Brian Fletcher (.455) snapped his hitting streak at seven games, and Cheslor Cuthbert (.370) extended his to seven. Geulin Beltre went 2-for-4 and owns a six-game hitting streak.

- Chase Boruff tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings and has given up earned runs in just three of his 22 outings.
