Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio-Dayton starting pitcher Daniel Renken struck out 14 batters to tie a club record as the Dragons defeated the Lansing Lugnuts 7-1 on Wednesday night. A crowd of 8,399 saw the Dragons 811th consecutive sell-out at Fifth Third Field, three short of the all-time sports record.
Renken also tied an all-time Midwest League record set in 1966 when he struck out 10 consecutive Lansing batters starting with the last batter of the first inning and continuing through the last batter of the fourth. He became just second pitcher in the 65-year history of the Midwest League to notch 10 strikeouts in succession and the first since May 22, 1966 when Art Groza of Burlington struck out 10 straight Dubuque batters.
Renken's 14 strikeouts matched the Dragons club record set by Josh Hall on August 7, 2001 vs. Cedar Rapids. Renken (3-8) earned the win, going six scoreless innings and allowing just two hits and one walk.
The Dragons scored five runs in the second inning to build a 5-0 lead. Donald Lutz started the scoring with a solo home run to right-center field, his 11th homer of the year. The Dragons went on to collect six hits in the inning and hit for the cycle as a team in the frame. Jefry Sierra had a triple, Ronald Torreyes added a double, and the Dragons got singles from Yorman Rodriguez, Juan Duran, and David Vidal in the inning.
On the night, Dayton collected 14 hits. Rodriguez and Duran each had three while Torreyes and Vidal added two. With a 2 for 5 night, Torreyes is hitting .412 through eight games with the Dragons.
The Dragons moved into a three-way tie for first place in the Eastern Division after six games of the second half.
The Dragons (4-2, 39-37) will host the Bowling Green Hot Rods (3-3, 44-32) on Thursday at Fifth Third Field at 7:00 p.m. in the first game of a three-game series. Kyle Lotzkar (0-1, 7.24) will start for Dayton. The game will be televised on WHIO Digital Channel 7.2 (Time Warner Channel 23). Former Reds first baseman and Dragons manager Todd Benzinger will provide color commentary.
