Checkers Sign Goaltender Ayers

Charlotte, N.C. - General manager and head coach of the Charlotte Checkers, Derek Wilkinson, announced today that the team has signed goaltender, Mike Ayers and placed him on the three-day injured reserve.

Ayers, 5-foot-11, 185 pounds, was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the sixth round of the 2000 National Hockey League Entry Draft. Last season, Ayers dressed in nine games with the Pensacola Ice Pilots earning a record of 2-6-1 holding a 3.98 goals against average and a .892 save percentage. That same year, he played in two contests for the Norfolk Admirals of the American Hockey League where he tallied a 3.86 goals against average with a .913 save percentage.

The native of Hingham, MA played four seasons in the NCAA with the University of New Hampshire where he was a teammate with Checkers forward, Shawn Vinz during his senior year. He started his professional career playing 51 games with the Dayton Bombers during the 2004-05 season.

The Checkers are in their 15th season of play as a member of the ECHL. Their next home game takes place on Nov. 30 against the Columbia Inferno. In the team's 14-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 10 times including three consecutive playoff appearances to date. The Checkers will enter their third season of play at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena this fall. Season tickets are on sale now with full-season packages starting at just $399.
