Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

The Salmon Kings and the Roadrunners met for the second straight time last night at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. Victoria won the first game on Wednesday night 4-3 in overtime.

The teams relied on their goaltenders in the first frame as the teams went to the locker room tied 0-0. The second period had Phoenix jump on the board early as Chris Stevens scored at the 3:08 mark to stake Phoenix to the 1-0 lead. The Salmon Kings would reply 10 minutes later when Wes Goldie put home a rebound off of a shot by his brother Ash to tie the game at 1-1. That would be the score as the team's entered the third period.

The Salmon Kings would notch two quick goals. The first saw Derek Krestanovich tip a Gary Gladue shot past Phoenix's Dave McKee. The second goal occurred when Matt Kelly snuck in from the blueline during the power play and took a goalmouth pass to put the Kings up 3-1. Phoenix would storm back though with two goals. Corey LeClaire made the score 3-2, and then Sean O'Connor would tie the game with 42 seconds remaining in the third period.

Overtime would solve nothing as the teams were deadlocked in a 3-3 tie. The trend continued, as after five shooters McKee and Kings' goaltender Billy Thompson had only let in a single goal a piece. Victoria's captain, Kiel McLeod, would bury his chance on the Salmon Kings first sudden death opportunity. Thompson would then shut the door on Thatcher Bell propelling the Salmon Kings to their ninth straight victory at home.

Victoria went 1/4=25.0% and Phoenix was 0/1=0.0% on the power play. Victoria outshot Phoenix 45-39.

The Salmon Kings return to the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre the next two nights where they will continue their series versus the Phoenix Roadrunners. Game time is 7:05 p.m. Call 220-7889 for tickets.
