Checkers head into final week of regular season

CHARLOTTE, NC - The Charlotte Checkers picked up two wins in three games last week with wins over South Carolina and Augusta on Thursday and Saturday, respectively. The Checkers did fall 3-7 to South Carolina on Friday. The Checkers now move into the final week of the regular season. Charlotte will travel to Columbia on Friday and close out the regular season Saturday at Greenville.

The Checkers need just one point to secure the fifth place spot in the South Division. Charlotte can also lock up the fifth place spot with an Augusta loss.

Thursday, March 30, 2006 vs. South Carolina, W-OT, 3-2 The Charlotte Checkers closed out the home schedule in dramatic fashion with an overtime win against the South Carolina Stingrays Thursday in front of 5,898 fans at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena. Mike Bayrack scored twice for the Checkers including the game winner at the 1:23 mark of overtime.

Friday, March 31, 2006 at South Carolina, L, 3-7 The South Carolina Stingrays wrapped up fourth place in the ECHL's Southern Division with a 7-3 triumph over the Charlotte Checkers Friday night in Charleston, South Carolina. Cail McLean scored twice for South Carolina, while the Stingrays got single goals from Danny O'Brien, Robin Gomez, Anders Strome, Likit Anderson and Darren Lynch. Stingrays goalie Davis Parley got the victory with 30 saves.

The Checkers scored a short-handed goal from Dusty Jamieson, and even-strength tallies from Juris Stals and Kris MacPhee. Charlotte netminder Chris Holt suffered the loss making 31 saves. Despite the loss, the Checkers won the eleven-game season series going 9-2-0 against the Stingrays.

Saturday, April 1, 2006 at Augusta, W, 3-1 The Charlotte Checkers rebounded from a 7-3 defeat Friday night with a solid 3-1 victory over the Augusta Lynx Saturday night in Georgia. Checkers goalie Jeff Glass played a playoff-style game, earning his 16th victory of the season and stopping 46 Augusta shots. Jeremy Schreiber scored his first goal of the season for the Checkers and first professional goal, while Kenton Smith and Bruce Graham also tallied for Charlotte.
