Charlotte Checkers News Release
(Bakersfield, CA - Tuesday, December 9, 2003) - The Charlotte Checkers continued their stellar play in California Tuesday night, beating the Bakersfield Condors 4-1. Charlotte improved their record on their season-long, seven-game road trip to 4-0, and pulled into sole possession of fifth place in the Southern Division of the ECHL's Eastern Conference. Center Benoit Dusablon, second in the ECHL's "Player of the Week" voting for last week's play, continued his torrid scoring with four points Tuesday night, giving him seven points in his last two games. Right wing Brandon Cullen scored two goals and an assist for the Checkers while Doug Christiansen added the other Charlotte tally. Scott Meyer made 22 saves to get the win in net for the Checkers.
"The guys and I felt that this was our best team effort of the season," remarked Checkers Head Coach, Don MacAdam. "After giving up the early goal in the first minute, we played really well for the next 59 minutes. Our penalty kill was solid tonight too as we were able to kill all eight of the Condors' power plays. When you consider we are missing two of our top offensive defensemen in Preston and Aufiero, and two of our top forwards in Jamieson and McKay, we have to be very happy to have won four straight on this road trip."
Bakersfield grabbed a quick lead just 15 seconds into the game as Jason Ralph beat Meyer getting assists from former Checkers left wing Andrew Ianiero and Paul Rosebush. Charlotte tied it up at 1-1 at 12:07 as Christiansen lifted the puck over Bakersfield goalie Peter Hirsch on the short side on a power play, with assists from Dusablon and Rory Rawlyk. Charlotte outshot the Condors 17-4 as the two teams remained tied 1-1 at the end of the first period.
Dusablon got the Checkers the lead for good and the game-winning goal in the second period with his eighth tally of the season on a two-on-one break at 13:18 for a 2-1 Charlotte lead. Cullen assisted on the goal to extend his point scoring streak to seven games. The Checkers also dominated period number two, outshooting the Condors 13-6 for a two period advantage of 30-10.
In the third period the Checkers got two insurance goals, both from Cullen, for a 4-1 lead. Charlotte cruised the rest of the way for the 4-1 final.
The win improved the Checkers record to 9-9-3 for 21 points, while the Condors dropped to 8-11-2 for 18 points. Game # 5 of the Checkers season-high, seven-game road trip continues Wednesday night in Fresno, California with a 10:00 p.m. ET / 7:00 p.m. PT faceoff against the Falcons. The game can be heard over the Internet beginning at 10:00 p.m. Eastern Time by logging on to the Checkers web site at www.gocheckers.com.
Following the seven-game road trip, the Checkers will finally return to Cricket Arena on Saturday, December 20 to host the Gwinnett Gladiators at 7:30 p.m.
NOTES: Brandon Cullen was recalled to the Hartford Wolf Pack after Tuesday's game. He extended his point streak to seven games at 5g, 4a = 9 pts with his two goals and an assist. Benoit Dusablon's four points extended his point streak to eight games with 7g, 8a = 15 pts in that span. Dave Inman kept his point streak alive (9gms - 4g-10a = 14pts) with an assist Tuesday.
