Charlotte Checkers News Release

Fort Myers, FL. - The game looked like it was heading to extra sessions but a late goal by the Florida Everblades made sure it ended in regulation as they defeated the Charlotte Checkers, 2-1.

The Everblades struck first in the contest thanks to a power play goal. Checkers netminder, Chris Holt made a spectacular save on a shot by Ernie Hartlieb but, the goaltender couldn't stop the second attempt as Hartlieb slammed the puck in at 14:48 giving Florida a 1-0 lead.

Charlotte would tie the contest up on a power play goal of their own. Chris Capraro fired a shot that Everblades goalie, David Shantz turned aside but, Blake Bellefeuille was stationed on top of the blue paint to swat the puck behind the goalie at 18:29. This tied the contest at 1-1 going into the last twenty minutes of action.

Both teams had chances with a two-man advantage but were unable to beat the goalies. It was a breakdown by Charlotte that resulted in an odd man rush for the Everblades that ended up being the difference. Mathieu Melanson streaked down the right-wing side and slid the puck between the legs of Holt at 17:03. This ended up being the winning goal as Florida skated away with a 2-1 win.

Notes: Holt stopped 32 of 34 while Shantz turned aside 34 of 35...Both teams scored one power play goal. Charlotte had seven tries while Florida had five...Both teams will meet two more times at Germain Arena on Saturday and Sunday.

The Checkers are in their 15th season of play as a member of the ECHL. Their next home game takes place on Feb. 20 against the Florida Everblades.
