Salmon Kings Comeback In Vegas

The Victoria Salmon Kings and Las Vegas Wranglers met at the Orleans Arena in Nevada on Friday evening. It was a match-up of the National Conference's top teams.

The Wranglers jumped on the Salmon Kings right off the hop. Adam Cracknell scored less than two minutes in when he beat goaltender Julien Ellis. As a power play ended minutes later Marco Peluso was able to squeeze one past Ellis for a 2-0 lead less than five minutes into the game. Kings' coach Mark Morrison changed netminders at this point, Billy Thompson entered the game. Victoria regrouped and was able to close the gap when Ash Goldie's shot on a 5-on-3 power play went in off the Wranglers' defender. Vegas led 2-1 after one period.

The Salmon Kings continued to apply the pressure in the second period, but Wranglers goaltender Daniel Manzato was equal to the challenge. The Kings finally tied the game up with 2:59 remaining in the period. Kiel McLeod won the faceoff and a Patrick Coulombe point shot was stopped, but McLeod was on the doorstep and popped the rebound into the net. It was a 2-2 game after forty minutes.

The third period saw the King score the go ahead goal when Milan Gajic found Dylan Yeo at the point for a one timer that went top shelf gloveside for the 3-2 lead. The Kings held off the Wranglers the rest of the way. Salmon Kings 3 Wranglers 2

The Salmon Kings went 1/4=25.0% on the power play and Vegas was 0/3=0.0% with the extra attacker. The Salmon Kings out shot the Wranglers 36-16.

The Salmon Kings and Wranglers meet again tomorrow evening in the second of this two game set at 7:05 p.m. The Kings are then off to Phoenix for a Monday evening game versus the Roadrunners. Victoria returns home on Wednesday for a big three game set versus the defending Kelly Cup Champion Idaho Steelheads. The first game goes Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Call 220-7889 for tickets.
