Columbia Inferno News Release
COLUMBIA, S.C. (Feb. 15, 2008)-The Columbia Inferno (20-19-4-6, 50 points) beat the visiting Mississippi Sea Wolves (21-27-1-2, 45 points) 3-2 on Friday night to win their third straight and sweep the Second Annual Pink in the Rink Weekend.
The Inferno took a 1-0 lead on Mac Faulkner's shorthanded goal nine minutes into the first. Faulkner found himself on a breakaway during the penalty kill, deked Ryan Munce to the right and backhanded the puck to the empty net on Munce's left for his second shorthanded goal in as many nights. Sea Wolves winger Lance Monych tied the game at 13:32 of the first when his sharp angle shot from the goal line snuck past Todd Ford as the goaltender tried to hug the post. The Inferno regained the lead three minutes later as Owen Fussey and Brad Ralph cycled the puck behind the net. Fussey emerged with the puck and put it past Munce's blocker side with a snapshot.
Columbia padded its lead with five minutes left in the second period when Jeremy Hall one-timed a Jeff Miles pass from the low slot past Munce.
It looked as if the score would hold, but the Sea Wolves inched to within one goal with just 52 seconds left in the game when Monych got his second of the night by slamming a Marek Kvapil pass past Ford's blocker side.
Munce finished with 26 saves on 29 shots, while Ford stopped 37 of 39.
The Inferno return to the Carolina Coliseum on Saturday, Feb. 16 to host the Pensacola Ice Pilots at 1:05 p.m.
