Reading Royals News Release

Reading, PA - The Reading Royals (27-17-3=57, 3rd North Division) of the ECHL took a two goal lead to the third period and had to hold on to get to the shootout against the Dayton Bombers, where Reading took the two points, 4-3. This marked the Royals fifth trip this season to the shootout, where the team has compiled a 4-1 record; and three of those shootout wins have been against the Bombers. In this one, only one shooter out ten found the back of the net, and it was Reading's Kevin Saurette, as Royals' goaltender Jon Quick (19-11-2; 28/31) was perfect in the final frame. Dayton goaltender, Jeremy Duchesne (10-7-4; 39/42) made a number of spectacular stops to give his team a chance throughout the 65 minutes of hockey, but took the SOL.

Reading struck 4:15 into the first period after a strong forecheck created a series of turnovers in Dayton's defensive zone. Kevin Saurette ended up with the puck high in the slot and threaded the needle to Dany Roussin who was below the Bomber defense in front of Dayton's net. Roussin cut to the right side of the goal and drilled a back-hander under the bar for his fourteenth of the year. Dayton bounced back 1:56 later, when Grant Goeckner-Zoeller dug the puck out from behind the Royals' goal and fed Ryan Smyth at the ride side of the net. Before Quick could get to the right pipe to make a stop, Smyth drilled it short-side for his eleventh of the year.

Reading came out storming in the second period and bagged a pair of goals in the process. 2:44 into the period another strong forecheck resulted in another turnover and opportunity for Marc Cavosie at the left side of the Dayton goal. Cavosie slipped a shot through Duchense that appeared to hit Ned Lukacevic in the skate, redirecting it into the goal for his thirteenth goal of the year. 1:52 after that, Dave Pszenyczny, playing in his first game for Reading after being acquired from the Alaska Aces in a trade on Tuesday, scored his first goal as a Royal. Saurette found P.J. Atherton at the right point, and Atherton ripped a hard slap shot on goal. Duchense made the stick stop, but the rebound went high to the top of the left circle, where Pszenyczny stepped up and ripped one home for his third of the year.

In the third, it was Dayton's turn to come out storming, and they answered with a pair of their own. 4:05 into the period, Masahito Nishiwaki took off on a breakaway after Pszenyczny lost an edge and fell while trying to keep left point. Nishiwaki fired from the top of the right circle and the puck found a space between the legs of Quick for Nishiwaki's eleventh of the year. Dayton tied the game at three, when Matt Beaudoin picked up his league leading thirty-first goal of the year. Scott Kelman won an offensive zone faceoff to the front of the Royals' goal, where a diving Beaudoin got enough of the puck to slip it home with 9:26 left in regulation. The two teams traded chances for the remaining time through the OT without resolution. In the shootout, the Royals sent Cavosie, Patrik Hersley, Brock Hooton, Saurette and Lukacevic-with Saurette bagging the only goal; while Quick stopped Kelman, Brad Bonello, Mike Berry, Beaudoin, and Nishiwaki in succession.

The Royals are back in action tomorrow night (Saturday, February 16 @ 7:05 pm) when the Texas Wildcatters visit the Sovereign Center for the only time (at least during the regular season). That night, Reading will host 'Cowboy/Rodeo Night' when the first 2000 fans will receive a Royals' cowboy hat. The game night broadcast next Saturday will begin at 6:35 pm with the pre-game warm-up show on ESPN Radio 1240 am in Ephrata, as well as on the internet through the Royals' website, www.royalshockey.com. Streaming video is available on a pay per view basis through the B2 Networks.
