Charlotte Checkers News Release

Gwinnett, GA. - The Charlotte Checkers managed to hold onto a 3-2 lead against the Gwinnett Gladiators despite a late surge from the opposition as David Rutherford scored his second consecutive game winning goal of the season.

It took every second of the first period except the last one for the Checkers to score the first goal of the game. Checkers forward David Rutherford streaked down the right wing and centered a pass for the oncoming Mike Bayrack who redirected the puck between the legs of Gwinnett goalie Josh Johnson at 19:59.

The Gladiators tied the contest in the first minute of play when Matt Siddall blasted a one-timer past a screened checkers netminder Jeff Jakaitis at :47. The Checkers retrieved their one-goal lead when Mike Taylor deflected a Ryan Murphy pass over the glove of Johnson at 2:35.

The game would be tied again thanks to a shot by Dirk Southern that went over the glove of Jakaitis at 8:53 locking the game at 2-2. Charlotte wouldn't allow the contest to be tied for long as defenseman Julien Brouillette's point shot hit the goaltender and rolled over his shoulder. Rutherford stationed at the side of the crease edged the puck over the goal-line at 12:26 putting up the Checkers 3-2. Despite a very late flurry of shots in front of Jakaitis, the Checkers skated away victorious.
