Chasers Ice 'Cakes 3-0
August 31, 2018 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
Omaha starter Glenn Sparkman tossed seven shutout frames and struck out eight while receiving all of the run support needed thanks to the Storm Chasers' three-run first frame highlighted by right fielder Paulo Orlando 's two-run double as the club posted their league-best fourteenth shutout victory in a 3-0 win over the New Orleans Baby Cakes at the Shrine on Airline in Metairie, Louisiana.
Sparkman (6.0 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 8 K) scattered five hits in his seven excellent innings of work, fanning eight to earn his fifth win of the year. He faced just three batters over the minimum while matching a season-high with his eight punchouts. Omaha relievers Josh Staumont (0.2 IP, 2 BB, 2 K) and Richard Lovelady (1.1 IP, BB, 3 K) combined for the final two frames, with Staumont receiving his fifth hold and Lovelady notching his eighth save. New Orleans starter Zac Gallen (6.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, BB, 9 K) suffered the defeat despite a quality outing.
Orlando put the Storm Chasers on the board with his two-run two-bagger to left for the early 2-0 advantage. 3B Humberto Arteaga then added to the margin immediately after with an RBI double of his own to left for a three-run lead. New Orleans threatened in the eighth with runners at second and third, however the Staumont was able to quell the threat and keep the Baby Cakes off the board.
Arteaga (2-3, 2B, RBI, BB) and Torres (2-4, R) each tallied two knocks in the victory for Omaha. No New Orleans hitter accrued more than one knock. The triumph was the Storm Chasers' 14th shutout of 2018, the most of any Pacific Coast League club.
Omaha and New Orleans face off in the second game of their four-game set on Saturday evening, with first pitch scheduled for 6:00pm CT. The Storm Chasers' starting pitcher has not yet been determined, while the Baby Cakes are expected to send RHP Jeff Brigham (5-2, 3.44) to the hill.
The Storm Chasers begin their 2019 home slate at Werner Park on Tuesday, April 9 versus the Oklahoma City Dodgers. Ticket packages for the 2019 season are available. For more information, fans may contact the Werner Park Ticket Office at (402) 738-5100 or email tickets@omahastormchasers.com.
