December 19, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, S.C. - After a nine day hiatus the South Carolina Stingrays returned to action against the Pensacola Ice Pilots at the North Charleston Coliseum. Although many members of the team expressed concern over being rusty, Chris Chaput made sure that it was a non-issue. Chaput scored a season high four goals as the Stingrays extended their winning streak to seven games.
"He did all the little things," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "That's what gave him those opportunities. He did the little things and made the best of the shots he took."
In the first period it was Chaput who scored the lone goal. At 6:44 he got his 5th tally of the year with the lone assist going to Pierre-Luc O'Brien.
The second period turned out to be the big one for the Stingrays, as they got four more. Paul McIlveen scored his 6th goal of the season from O'Brien and Trent Cambell at 3:41 to make it 2-0. Down a man, Marty Guerin scored a short handed goal from Stephen Werner and Scott Romfo at 6:58 to extend the lead to 3-0. For South Carolina, that was their 7th short handed goal of the season, tying them with Reading for the most in the ECHL. Erik Fabian cut into the lead with his 2nd goal of the season, from A.J. MacLean and Jean-Claude Sawyer at 10:31 making it 3-1. Chaput would score two more in the period, one at 11:05 from Travis Morin and one at 14:49 from Werner and Nate Kiser to get the hat trick and make it 5-1.
In the third period Chaput would bulge the ol' onion bag once again, giving him four goals on the night. Chaput's 8th goal on the season came from Matt Scherer and O'Brien at 5:13, making it 6-1, the eventual final.
The winning goaltender was Davis Parley who stopped 21 of the 22 shots that he faced. The losing goaltender was Cam Ellsworth who stopped 28 of the 34 shots that he faced. The Rays went 0 for 4 on the power play, while killing off all four short handed situations they faced.
The Rays will be back in action on Friday night as they finish a brief two game series against the Pilots. Friday night's game is sponsored by Personal Care Ambulance and features the always popular gurney races. Game time will be at 7:05 and will be broadcast live on ESPN 910 the TEAM.
