Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Dayton, OH - Julio Cedeno homered and had three hits to lead the Hot Rods past the Dayton Dragons, 6-4, on Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Field. Chris Murrill added three hits as Bowling Green pounded out 13 total hits to their fourth straight from Dayton heading into the finale of this five-game series on Monday night.
The Hot Rods jumped right out on the Dragons and starter J.C. Sulbaran by scoring a pair of runs in the first inning. Chris Murrill began with a single to left field, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt from Tyler Bortnick. With one out, Dustin Biell singled to center field to score Murrill for a 1-0 lead. The inning continued when Mayo Acosta grounded out to advance Biell to second base. He came around a few pitches later when Eligio Sonoqui singled into center to bump the lead to 2-0.
Dayton came right back to answer the bell in the bottom of the second inning against Alexander Colome. Josh Garton began the inning by reaching on an error. He was followed by Frank Pfister, who doubled into the left field corner. Garton tried to score from third but he was thrown out at home on a perfect relay by the Hot Rods to preserve their 2-0 lead.
That preservation was short-lived as Shane Carlson delivered a triple to deep center field to score Pfister. Carlson then scored two batters later on a two-out single from Cameron Satterwhite to tie the game at 2-2.
It stayed tied at 2-2 until the Hot Rods began to pull away with solo runs in each inning from the fourth through the seventh. With one out, Julio Cedeno singled before Robi Estrada was hit by a pitch. After Ty Morrison struck out, Chris Murrill doubled down the left field line to score Cedeno for a two-out run and a 3-2 lead.
The fifth inning rally started on a Sonoqui double to right field with one out. He took second on a groundout from Brett Nommensen and then scored on a single to center field by Cedeno. The run gave the Hot Rods a 4-2 lead and was their third two-out run of the game.
In the sixth, Murrill picked up his third hit of the game, a one-out double into the right field corner. Tyler Bortnick followed with a single into left field, scoring Murrill to bump the lead to 5-2.
Cedeno delivered the final Hot Rods' strike with two outs in the seventh. He fell behind 0-2 against Blair Carson before working the count full. On the 3-2 pitch, he hit a long home run to left field, his first of the season that stretched the lead to 6-2.
Alexander Colome was the beneficiary of the run support as he earned his fourth straight win in the month of May, improving his overall record to 4-2. He worked six innings, allowing two runs on six hits, three walks, and four strikeouts.
Cedeno finished the day 3-4 with two RBI, both coming with two outs. Murrill scored twice and had two doubles among his three hits. Sonoqui also finished the day with two hits and his fourth RBI of the road trip. As a team, the Hot Rods have five homers in the series, raising their season total from eight to 15.
Two-out scoring was big again for Bowling Green as the team scored four times with two outs. They have now scored 27 runs in the series, 20 of them crossing home plate with two outs.
Matt Stabelfeld pitched the seventh and eighth innings, allowing a lead-off home run in the eighth to cut the Hot Rods lead to 6-3. In the ninth, Scott Shuman struggled with his command, allowing three walks and an RBI single, but he managed to strike out the final two batters of the game with the bases loaded for his fifth save of the season.
The series comes to an end on Monday night as LHP Aaron Dott (0-1, 12.00) takes on Dayton RHP Josh Ravin (2-3, 3.27). First pitch is at 6 PM CDT. You can follow the game with Tom Gauthier beginning at 5:45 PM CDT on 1340 AM WBGN and www.bghotrods.com.
