Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - Trailing 2-1 with two gone in the eighth inning, Daniel Carroll laced a two-run triple just inside the left-field line to bring the Clinton LumberKings back for a 3-2 lead and ultimately a 4-3 win over the Kane County Cougars at Alliant Energy Field. Carroll went 1-for-4 to help the Kings to their seventh win in the last eight games.

Right-hander Taylor Stanton fired a career-high 8.0 innings, but looked poised to lose after giving up two runs, one earned. Kane County scored on a Mike Gilmartin smash single off first-baseman Vinnie Catricala, plating Conner Crumbliss from second. Stanton (W, 4-2) then gave up an earned run as Rashun Dixon began the seventh with a double and scored on a wild pitch.

Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh, the LumberKings finally cracked the scoreboard. Facing right-hander Kevin Christensen, Gabriel Noriega reached on a one-out single. Catricala lined a double into the left-field corner to put runners at second and third and an RBI groundout by Gebbers sent Noriega home to cut the deficit to 2-1.

With Christensen (L, 0-2) still on in the eighth, the Kings struck again. Brandon Bantz was hit by a pitch with one out and moved to third on a single to center by Welington Dotel. After a Dotel steal put both runners in scoring position, Carroll stepped to the plate to face Cougars' closer Jose Guzman. He lined a 3-2 pitch to left to score both, sliding in safely to third for his second triple of the season.

One batter later, Noriega would rope a single to left to score Carroll. Noriega finished 3-for-4 with three singles on the day, joining Catricala (3-for-5) and Nick Franklin (2-for-3) in multi-hit efforts.

That insurance run proved to be pivotal as left-hander Jose Jimenez (H, 2) gave up an infield single to Leonardo Gil to begin the ninth. Gil took second on an errant throw by Mario Martinez and stood at third with two outs as closer Brandon Josselyn was summoned to the mound. Josselyn (S, 6) yielded an RBI single to Myrio Richard to cut the lead to 4-3, but fanned Nino Leyja swinging to end the game.

Left-hander Justin Marks threw 6.0 scoreless innings and struck out five for Kane County, who drops its fifth-straight game. Crumbliss and Dixon each went 2-for-4 in the losing effort.

The LumberKings (23-20) conclude the series with Kane County (20-24) tomorrow night at Alliant Energy Field, first pitch scheduled for 6:30 PM. Right-hander Erasmo Ramirez (2-2, 2.43) will make his fifth start, eighth appearance for Clinton. Listen to all the action on AM 1390 KCLN in Clinton or live on the web at 1390kcln.com.
